We’ve known about head tracking in Gran Turismo 5 since last August, but this is the first time we’ve seen it in the flesh, so to speak. Equipped with nothing additional than an Eye-toy camera, Gran Turismo 5 appears to quite happily spin the internal view as quickly as you turn your head.

It does seem a little exagerated, but it’s pretty nippy at detecting your movement and I’m assuming if it’s used properly – you know, like looking for the apex rather than shaking your head furiously – it could be quite a neat little addition to the game.

Shame it’s only left and right though, you don’t appear to be able to look up and down.

  1. But if you look left or right… you aren’t looking at the damn screen!

    • turn your head, but keep your eyes on the screen… Simples.

I think it could be a neat little trick, but not a mega selling point… Though I’d expect Forza 4 to tout it endlessly.

    • I suspect it will be like TrackIR Pro whereby the movement of your head is taken in then exaggerated so a tiny movement could make you look 90 degrees on the system

    • I read somewhere that you just have to move your head left or right so you don’t have to turn it. I hope and think it must be true because otherwise it’s just stupid. Even if you look at the screen while turning your head it doesn’t feel right.

      • Sounds very unnatural to me. Still, if the game is good, sod the head tracking.

      • Yeah I agree. It is a nice feature if it works properly but it won’t make or break the game for me.

  3. Was it ever going to be anything other than ultra-subtle?
Might benefit hardcore players very slightly but for the rest of us … a beautiful but limited gimmick.

  4. Up and down head tracking would be more of a ‘useless’ feature. That is to say, what are you looking at?

  6. Remember seeing a tweet from someone who’d tried this with 3D a few weeks back.
Said it was the most immersive thing they’d ever experienced in a game!

  9. Looks alright. Don’t know if I’ll even do that in game to be honest. What I will have to do however, is to buy a wheel.

    • I thought that! Watching this vid, I thought sod the head tracking, Ive got to get myself a wheel again!
