Everybody put on your ‘concerned’ faces for a moment (see any Nicholas Cage film for inspiration), because a job listing has surfaced from inFamous 2 developer Sucker Punch, looking for a “writer/storyteller” to join the team.
“Our next big game, inFAMOUS 2, has lots of moving parts,” reads the listing. “Characters, missions, intertwined with narrative, cinematics, progression of game mechanics, and systemic content. We need someone who has both the experience and the horsepower to be responsible for all aspects of the storytelling for the game, from motion capture to animation.”
But here comes the worrying bit: “A big part of this job is being able to write spoken dramatic dialogue. You will be responsible for all spoken dialogue from in game dialogue to cut scenes to game play to cell phone conversations.” So hang on, does inFamous 2 not yet have any writing done? Bearing in mind it is is currently pegged for a 2011 release, surely I can’t be the only one a little unsure on a game without any in-game dialogue or key cutscenes?
Sucker Punch has recently done an about turn on the design of inFamous 2′s main character, now working on a hybrid between the old “gruff Cole” and new “rainbow Cole”, and now it looks like they are having some issues with the game’s story too.

They’re keeping the new voice still and it won’t be the same as the old Cole. They’re making it a mix of the old and new.

wait, so the game is in development but there’s no dialogue. what kind of process do they go through before starting to code? I’d assume you’d at least have a storyboard to start with to get an idea of where the game is heading, or have they just built the city and are hoping to cram some kind of story in.

I would imagine that voice-over work is one of the last things they have to do for the narrative. They’ll be storyboarding and working out key plot points for months before they even start scripting and VO comes at the very end of that process. Plenty of work to be done on buidling maps, models and textures too.
I wouldn’t be alarmed at this, it sounds like it’s a reasonable timeframe to me.

Maybe they just need someone to write the lines, as in they know what they want, they just need someone to show them how to say it. Or maybe they’ve even got the story and dialogue written they just want to refine it to get their point across.

I’m not too worried, I’d like to think this isn’t a major issue. From what I’ve seen so far of the game the dialogue seemed okay, obviously there hasn’t been much but still, I have faith in this game.

it does seem a bit late in the day to be looking to hire script writers for the game.

Well they obviously have some stuff done since we’ve heard it in trailers and whatnot. Maybe they’re packing in more extra bits this time round, like side missions and whatnot?
Either way really, I miss the old new Cole…he was hot :P

strange, I remember watching a gameplay demo with dialogue quite recently…
first the character re-re-design and now this…please Sucker Punch, don’t screw this up…
