Kinect: Video Shows Teething Problems

31A couple of videos have surfaced which seem to show Kinect is having a few teething problems. The first YouTube video, posted by warzonegamer, shows a player testing out Kinect at one of the Macy’s promotional stands. It seems to be going well until the 4m 25s mark…
A comment on MCV by ‘x360girlgamer’ tells of more problems with the Macy’s demo,
They should try it (Kinect) out a Macy’s… as I had several problems with it in store, it was laggy and kept on glitching because I was wearing a dress, and the menu’s was so hard because the pointer controls was simply broken, more time setting it up than playing it I am not impressed.
The second video, spotted by GamesRadar, appears to have been recorded at a demonstration in Japan and shows Kinect Sports having a shaky start, failing to register players completely and eventually getting moving once more…
It could be argued that the conditions for the second video are far from perfect, perhaps all those camera flashes are confusing the sensor. Reasons for why the Macy’s demo fail are less clear – there is only one player and it’s a well lit environment.
Team TSA are planning an assault on Covent Garden in London this very moment so we can try out Kinect ourselves, we shall report back as soon as we have (hopefully better) news.

I would get a serious headache shopping in that store! However what a bit of delightful irony that Kinect had a complete meltdown to the tune of “I like to Move it Move it” – priceless timing!
Kinect impresses me less and less every day – however the impossibly cute Kinectimals is bound to grab the attention of families and it will seem like such a brilliant idea for 5 minutes in the shop, but take it home and I’m pretty sure the novelty of wiping mist off the screen and turning around on the spot will wear off very fast, by then of course it will be too late and they’d have already bought Kinect, which is probably exactly what MS are hoping for. Why didn’t Sony get EyePet installed in Stores for example? MS will pay whatever it takes to make Kinect succeed…

I remember I went into a HMV store in Belfast and EyePet was there..
Tbh it did more harm than good..
Since the control scheme wasn’t detailed or anything, I was stuck for 5 minutes wishing the thing before I got fed up..

I saw Eyepet on a store once, it was hilarious.
They set up the camera so it showed ppls legs and feet and that poor little eyepet had a dayjob trying to avoid all the legs that came by :D
He was dirty and sad and still walking around, jumping over ppls feet, it was great (much much better working than above two kinect movies)

I wonder how long it will be before developers start including the ability to use one of the controllers for things like start, pause, number of players etc, and leaving the arm waving to the gameplay?

Seems to me you may have to change your curtains, change your decor, redesign your lighting system, paint your self and /or get naked, buy tape (as mentioned above) or look just like one of those families from the Kinect promo videos……..Sony’s marketing department must thrusting clenched fists into the air and shouting “Hoorah!”
