Survey: Move To Outsell Kinect In The UK

A recent survey of 2,301 people were asked for their thoughts on both the PlayStation Move and Microsoft Kinect. The results were quite dramatic with 64% of PlayStation 3 owners saying they would be buying the new technology, the news less good for Microsoft with only 23% of Xbox owners saying they would be buying Kinect.

77% of the respondents said that the high price point of Kinect would discourage them from buying the motion control system and only a paltry 19% were ‘impressed’ by the Kinect launch titles. The survey was run by UK based coupon site, Groupola.

“I genuinely believe that the main issue with the Kinect is that it’s been too highly priced,” said Groupola managing director Mark Pearson, “The cost may be its downfall, and unless the system launches to huge consumer acclaim, I think they’ll be dropping that price dramatically when the Move launches in order to compete.”

Let’s ignore the fact that a director of an internet coupon site is commenting on motion control devices is possibly not his area of expertise. The survey may be skewed in some way (I don’t have the raw data to check) but it does seem to point at a low uptake for Kinect.

  1. Oh here we go……

  2. I won’t be buying either system.
If I was tempted to give motion control a go, the one that I would get is Move.

  3. Quote by Mark Pearson :
“I think they’ll be dropping that price dramatically when the Move launches in order to compete.”

Move launches two months before Kinect ^.^

  4. ?? And the sky is blue ??

    These polls are hardly surprising

    • this is britain, no blue skies sorry

      • they are sometimes, blink and you’ll miss em, but they are there.

  5. Free Move with every coupon?

  6. I wonder what gamers they actually asked and what age. If they were young, then they wont, their parents will. So it sort of seems a bit silly.

    • Also, how many used each console.

      • It doesn’t matter how many used each console, the caculated the percentage of owners.

  7. From the videos I’ve seen from M$ Promo stands Kinect looks broken. I originally thought that M$ would encourage people to buy it. From what I’ve seen it’s more likely to put people off. Not to mention there’s no decent games on it.

    • Don’t use “M$.” It’s blatant fanboy-ism.

      • However Activi$ion is acceptable ;)

      • How is it blatant fanboy-ism? It’s very true, it’s been like that way, waay before the first Xbox was released..

      • Yes,

M$ is a nickname earned in the world of computing through their ‘bullying’ tactics towards other companies like Xerox & Apple in the early days of computing right through to current disputes with Linux supporting companies, all the way through to their reported terms of supply to hardware manufacturers.

However, it doesn’t really apply in gaming any more than $ony or Son¥ does, and usually only used in a derogatory fanboy-style manner.

So doesn’t really have a place on TSA.

      • Microsoft sold me Vista. They’ve earned the title “M$” as far as I’m concerned.

      • Well “Son¥” does look cool though =)

  8. It doesn’t tell you how many non-360 owners will be buying Kinect, which will be of even more interest to Microsoft, especially as the Xbox 360S & Kinect bundle is the same price as a PS3 is.

It won’t take a genius to picture the queues in GAME at Christmas.

Sony have done a good job in selling Move as a complimentary control system to the exisitng one which of course will appeal to current owners especially as a range of games are being retro-fitted for Move.

Microsoft are marketing Kinect outside of gaming circles to the mainstream and will probably sell more 360’s along with Kinects because of that.

    • Exactly! MS are using the Kinect to sell more consoles, rather than trying to sell the device to their current userbase. Smart business, and something which this survey fails to cover.

      • My comment isn’t a negative against Sony or Move though… its just interesting that both companies have tackled the problem in completely opposite directions.

From the the outside looking in (as we all are at the minute) I’d say Kinect may well sell more initially, but Move could probably overtake it in the long run.

The most interesting thing will be when the second wave of games comes out, will Kinect be able to break away from Sports, Fitness & EyePet type games – and does it even need too? (We obviously know that Move can – but will this muddy the sales message to the mainstream)

  9. Kinect may offer better value for money, in terms of which provides the complete experience for less, but I don’t doubt the accuracy of the poll. I feel much the same way – I’ve not been massively impressed by the games Kinect offers, and as such, at the high price, it’s not something I will immediately invest in.

I agree with cc_star though, that a large portion of the battle between the 2will be fought over the consumers that currently own neither console.

    • It will still involve try before you buy and from what I’ve seen of people trying it a lot of people will be put off buying it. One video I’ve seen is from Macys in NY. The simple act of pushing a pretend button wouldn’t work and the MS rep couldn’t get it to work either. It was so glitchy in perfect conditions. It was far from an isolated incident too. I’m so disappointed in kinect.

    • It’s broken though, so I don’t know what value for money you’ll be getting.

  10. As much as I would like to see Move do better (for no reason other than my own prejudices), I honestly believe that when it comes down to it Kinect is going to sell like hot-cakes over Move. The average consumer doesn’t want the best device, they want the device they have had shoved in their face the most. Microsoft have done a far better job promoting their device within the mainstream market and I think this is going to show come release.

    • Completely agree. I sometimes wonder if Sony have a marketing department at all or perhaps they just have supremely arrogant directors who masturbate over their bonuses all day.

Seriously, Sony, get it sorted. Get this into the public domain by spending some money and engaging the consumer.

      • Argh, brain image of Jack Tretton and KB diddling themselves over piles of money. Must…remove…eyes….

    • That’s the same thing I say to myself. I was in the US for 2 weeks, and was watching tv allot, and I swear to GOD that I never saw a SONY commercial on tv. Only XBOX. So if I was a normal person looking to get a console, I would obviously get an XBOX for the simple reason that I see it all over the place, so it MUST be good…???
      Cm’on SONY.
