While they’ve been keen to stress that they’re not actually holding a press conference in the traditional sense, Microsoft have said they will show some cool stuff today. The press releases are starting to come through and the bulk of the announcements seems to be new sports for Kinect Sports (javelin, long jump and discus) and that they’ll be showing off Halo: Reach and Fable III again.
Fable III will show off some new combat and the “touch mechanic” we saw unveilled at X10 in February. Big fans of the action adventure RPG will also be able to pick up the limited edition Fable controller which has one-off artwork from Lionhead.
The only genuinely new information I can find in the press releases, aside from the new Kinect Sports, is the list of newly announced tracks for what looks likely to be Kinect’s best fare: Dance Central. The list is reproduced below and they seem to be hitting all the right notes for their target audience with those tracks.
We’ll keep an eye on anything else coming from Microsoft but it looks like it’s mostly going to be European demonstration of the stuff they’ve unveiled before.

it’s not actually a conference though. Microsoft have always stated that they won’t be doing anything big at Gamescom – they never do really.
I was hoping for a bit more though.

It’s been good for PC gamers – first Microsoft-published PC games in years, and the rebirth of both Flight Simulator and Age of Empires.

They’ve got a show floor, some quality hands-on time for journos, and some press releases. Same with Nintendo.
SEGA haven’t even gone at all.
I think they need to knock Gamescom on the head, and bring a CES/E3 style show back to London if no one can be arsed to turn up in Cologne.

Sony are doing a presentation so I’d hope they have lots more to say else it’s going to be a long one, where as MS & Ninty just have their products on the show floor

This is the official EA live stream
http://live-event.ea.com/gamescom/live/
This goes live at 3pm UK time
And these are two rumoured unofficial Sony [5pm UK] feeds (they never broadcast officially for some reason)

Long jump with Kinect?! That sounds like a disaster waiting to happen! I’m guessing it will be some mini-game equivalent as opposed to actually doing a big jump across your living room!
All in all it seems like a bit of a none event, a token gesture as not to snub Europe completely. I’m hoping for some big news from Sony though, especially given that EA have already dropped a pretty huge PS3 announcement in the form of Mass Effect PS3 – one of my wish-list of announcements for the Sony conference…
As for Dance Central I wonder if ‘I Like to Move It’ will feature on the track list?!
