Top Gear Coming To Consoles?

Salt shaker at the ready, file this strictly under rumour and gossip but there has been mention of the BBC show ‘Top Gear’ on consoles.

An interview at MCV with BBC Worldwide’s vice president for digital entertainment, Robert Nashak, states that the BBC hired him because ‘BBC Worldwide needed a games specialist, one that not only knows consoles, but PC, online, casual, mobile.’

The interview continues with the following text;

“Nashak was the ideal candidate for the BBC. As well as EA, he held roles at Glu, Acclaim, Disney, Yahoo and Vivendi. But before he could begin taking Top Gear to consoles he had to build a team to build out the BBC Worldwide games offer.”

And then a little later,

“…developing games for the likes of Top Gear…”

So we put two and two together – the BBC are definitely working on a Top Gear game and if that little slip of keyboard is correct, it’s coming to consoles. Now before you get all excited it could just be the writer of the article casually throwing the word console about, however MCV do have a habit of ‘accidently’ dropping bombshells in the middle of routine news items.

Or course ‘consoles’ could include Wii and DS rather than the Xbox and PS3 but it seems sensible to have all that manly motoring stuff (rawr!) on the more ‘butch’ consoles.

  1. Anything that’s Top Gear related would be a day 1 purchase for me. Top Gear is brilliant! :D

    • unless itz a card-game lool XD

  2. With the inclusion of the top gear test track in GT5, surely a Top Gear game has been catered for?

    • Nah. GT5 won’t have the option to drive a clapped out 20 year old piece of crap down an English B road.

    • soo tru

  3. I’d bet my left leg that it would end up terrible and cheesy. They would just rely on the masses who watch and love the brilliant TV show to buy the game, and send out an average racer.
If it does come out, I’d want it to be good though, as I like TopGear, but I can’t see it being as good as F1 2010 or GT5, so I’d probably not buy it.

    • Yeah exactly. As disappointing as when I bought Robot Wars on PS2.

  4. I can just tell it’s going to be a wag your wii controller to blow up a caravan game. Damn and I’d just traded in my wii for a move controller.

  5. Awful. How can you make a programme that essentially reviews cars into a game? What you got to do? Have a little test drive of a car then write a review of how good it is? Sounds dreadful to me as a game idea.

    • Not often we disagree but Top Gear barely ever, EVER reviews cars any more. It’s pure entertainment so maybe the game consists of half the challenge stuff they get up. Drive from A to B and race a plane. Smash this Volvo into caravans, etc. If they cross-breed racing with Stunt Driver tomfoolery it might be a laugh (and I’m no Top Gear fan).

    • I assume most people won’t remember the Amiga game, but that was freaking awesome. Though, games back then didn’t really need a storyline…

  6. i dont think its worth wasting the licence payers money on what would never compete in this market. fifth gear ftw! more down to earth and less staged/fake

    • BBC worldwide is self funded – it is not paid for by license fees. It’s the branch of the BBC that generates revenue by selling the licenses for Doctor Who toys and selling programes abroad.

      • And how many times have you told someone that? Honestly I might get a T-shirt made up

  7. oh god please no.

  8. Althou it would probably be terrible i would buy it as I LOVE TOP GEAR. Just thought id get that out of my system.

    • Shhhh, don’t fuel their fire!
What you meant was “I will ONLY buy this if it is friggin awesome as I am a very discerning consumer and fan of the show who will NOT put up with any half-arsed effort.”

  9. I was actually looking up some info on the Driving Force GT and under the PlayStation 3 Supported games for the wheel was “Top Gear 4 – Race Across The Sea Abysm” but there’s no actual page for the game…

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logitech_Driving_Force_GT#PlayStation_3

    • Haha, I just googled that game and the first result was this page!

  10. Would it not be free tho like the dr.who games

    • If it was released as a Internet game, like doctor who, then yes it would be free. But if it where to come out on a console then obviously you’ll have to pay for it.

Aren’t the BBC already working on making a dr who game for the wii? And wouldn’t it make sense for this top gear game to follow suit
