Remember the PSP2 rumours that get hotter every month? Well, VG247 are citing “a source familiar with the matter” who has informed the website they’ve “been told it’s coming in late 2011″.  VG247 don’t mention who the source is.

This comes after reports that Sony were looking for an Android developer for the platform, and that at least one developer has already leaked the news that the portable exists having received development kits, with another developer saying it’s “powerful“.

Not that all PSP2 rumours should be believed, of course.  You can read all our news and rumours on PSP2 here.

We pinged Sony for a comment, but got the expected “we don’t comment on rumour or speculation” reply.

  1. Last night I fired up the PSP for the first time in months to have a go at Ace Armstrong after winning the compo on here. I was still on 5.something firmware and it’s now 6.2 so that shows how out of date it was!
It’s actually fantastic what Sony have done with it recently and if they carry that into an Android device I am fully sold.

  2. If it’s stated for release late 2011, with all the delays there will be (it’s Sony) we in Europe may get are hands on it mid 2012!

    • That sounds about right, it’s what I’ve expected for a few years now. I imagine will see some more concrete hardware leakes (maybe even images) in the new year.

Sony will probably announce it around the time of the 3DS release and the first play test will probably be at E3 with a fairly complete launch lineup.

      • Why after the release of 3DS?If they are smart the announce it a month or 2before the 3DS release.

      • Announce it around the launch of the 3DS to distrupt launch sales and try and steal the 3DS’s thunder. A PSP2 announcement would properly take more press then the 3DS launch. Sony will probably want to “piggy back” off the 3DS hype like they’ve admitted to with Kinect.

    • it will come out over the xmas period, so if it misses 2011 we will get it 2012

  3. I think i’ll get a PSP2 on day 1. I sort of missed out on the PSP
I’ve been thinking about getting a PSPgo recently. It’s that 10 games offer that’s attracting me :)
    Anyone got any advice? lol

    • If you dond’t have a PSP then a lot of the PSP Go problems aren’t there. Just make sure you use discounted PSN cards (you can save about 20%) and make the most of special offers on the store and you can find that games actually cost you less than anywhere else (though many will have you believe otherwise).

The 10 free games is great is there’s enough of them you want to play. If you want to take your PSP around with you most of the time the the pspgo is far more practical. You simple can’t take more than 1 or 2 UMDs around with you.

Buy an 8gb memory stick and you can easily fit about 30 PSP games, 20 minis and about 10 ps1 games on to a pspgo.

It all likelyhood the PSP2 will be digital only so if you buy UMD’s don’t expect them to work on a PSP2. If you’re a PSP Go owner you’ll probably be able to play all your games on a PSP2.

      • Well, It probably wouldn’t be taken out the house and wouldn’t be used a lot, so the 10 games would last ages.
My bro has a PSP with a handful of UMDs, but I can borrow that when I want :)
I’m only really considering it because Shopto are selling it for £175. That’s with a £20 PSN card. Take the 10 games into account and it makes it a very cheap-to-free PSP

      • All depends if you want to use the UMD’s or not. If you don’t need to be portable then a lot of the Go’s benefits won’t benefit you.

Which ever you pick I wouldn’t recomend buying UMD’s if you want to play the games on a PSP2.

      • Hmmm, i’ll have a bit more of a think about it.
Thanks for your opinion jimmy. Much appriciated
On a side note, i’ve read that the PSPgos (and 3000) motherboard has been hacked.
Could always buy UMDs and convert them to eboot files lol

    • I love my Go. Not being a PSP owner before, I have no issues I love the ease of use and add to it without issue and it is good fun. I tend not to play so many full games on there but it is used a lot for quick gaming sessions and an awful lot of minis.

      • Couple of questions regarding game downloads: Can you download games on MediaGO on PC?
If so, can you resume them and set them up to download at certain times?
I read that if the PSPgo drops connection, you have to restart the whole download.

  4. I have a question: how much? Cheaper than PSP Go Away?

    • From what I seen the suggestion is that is will be close to or a little more than a 3DS. That would (most likely) put in the £200 to £250 bracket.

So more than a PSP Go then. The PSP launched at £180 5 years ago. An “inflation” increase of £10 a year wouldn’t be a shock

    • I would be shocked if it was beyond £200 again, I have the PSP GO but that would’nt be nice for other people.

      • Get ready for a shock. With everything rumoured to be going into it it would be more of shock if it was under £200. With the 3DS price being so high they have little reason tp ush the price down.

To add touchscreen, improved hardware spec while not reducing battery life, cameras etc… Sony would have to lose a fair bit on each one. As long as it’s not too much more (£25-£50) than the 3DS Sony know they can stay competitive enough.

  5. The PSP2 will have some serious fighting to do if it’s to compete with 3D Ocarina of time. I must admit that the 3DS seems like the most fun so far (I know we don’t know much about the PSP2) it’s gonna be cheaper, 3D, have an analouge stick, touch-screen… the PSP2 will have to be able to cook to beat that.

Late 2011 seems logical, then Sony can make the 3DS old news quite quickly.

  7. psp2 needs to be announced and specs need to be shown and games announced BEFORE 3DS LAUNCHES otherwise its gonna be a brutal battle

  8. 2011 seems like a perfect time for a PSP2 assuming Sony will be working on it from now till then.
