On the back of SCEE’s announcement regarding the success of the Move, SCEA boss Jack Tretton has confirmed that in North America and Latin America the Move has sold one million units in its first 30 days. He also had the following to say:
“PlayStation Move is the most recent example of how product innovation continues to provide our customers with new and exciting ways to enjoy our technology.
Retail demand is incredibly strong and we’re working hard to keep the product in stock. We believe consumers have already shown their preference for a precise, interactive game experience.
We are on target to meet our end of year goals and expect sales to increase as our publishers and developers continue to update popular titles and introduce new games.”
Move’s biggest rival – Microsoft’s Kinect – will be launching next month, and with a huge marketing budget behind it we wonder if it can topple Move’s figures.

Kinect will almost certainly sell more than move, and we all know that’s because of ms marketting prowess. Move may have sold well, but honestly i’ve not used mine for ages because i can’t be arsed to stand up and play after an evening’s work, and there’s just hardly any games worth playing. Sports champions is good, but not a game i’m going to play every night. I’ve promised myself never to play flight control again because it’s just too addictive. I’m selling ruse, as much as i enjoyed the sp campaign i’ve realised i’m crap at the mp modes. So what’s left? Nothing. New, quality releases needed Please.

I’m hearing a lot lately about MS’s ‘marketing prowess’ but if you look at it objectively, it’s not really having that uch of an impact, really. MS always throws so much money behind marketing, in fact at times they saturate publicity which only puts people off. Considering Sony put no where near as much time and money into their pubicity, sales of the 360 over the PS3 aren’t really that impressive. They backed the HD DVD and that was a flop, now we get to see if the same thing happens with Kinct. Persnally I think it will sell well to people who don’t know about it’s flaws and have more money thans sense but will it sell better than the move? I just don’t know!

Well im quite sure kinect will outsell move by a big margin, just ask anybody who is not into gaming what is “move” and what is “kinect”. Several people at work are already planning to get it, some dont even know (or knew, until i told them) its not a console on its own!
You say there is not much difference between PS3 and 360 and its true, but if you see where they come from (PS2 and xbox) you can really see the HUGE market that MS has taken from sony, thanks in a big part (in my opinion) to a big marketing campaign.
At the height of the RROD drama there were hordes of gamers defending MS and its broken-cheap ass-materials console. THAT is good marketing!

It’s not so much ‘marketing prowess’ as it is marketing budget. Frankly they should be able to sell anything if they spend HALF A BILLION DOLLARS promoting and hyping it!
Does that make it good? No.
Does it make it better than Move? No.
Does it make it a success? No.
Numbers sold really are an irrelevant comparison beyond making good ‘console war’ headlines. How many are MS going to have to sell to recoup their marketing spend let alone the company acquisitions, R&D costs, manufacturing & distribution costs, development costs etc etc…

Personally I account the fact that the PS3 was released near neough a year later, with an exctremely critiqued high price tage and a change in the market from harcore to casual gameing as to blame, it’s not Microsoft that has taken Sony’s PS2 fans it is Nintendo with the Wii. Microsoft are only 2 million or so units ahead of the PS3 at the last count with MS in the easrly 40m mark and Sony in the late 30m mark, where as the Wii has moved 73m, which is a much healthier chunk of Sony’s 162m sales than Microsoft have got. Certainly MS’s PR is good, but the market has changes and the Wii thus far has been this genertion’s PS2 in terms of sales.

You now that you need to stand up on kinect or it wont work right?
The games for Kinect are much the same family games as what the ps3 has realsed. But the ps3 has games coming up as Socom and something that is already out is Residnet evil with move. The kinect is like a improved eyetoy for ps2 but you cant even move around in 3d so it will be as Wii, just a peice of crap that sells as butter. Move is so much more and better and with the ps3 engine it will kick kinect ass.

To be a little picky, shouldn’t the title read “The Americas?”

Go and sit in the corner. No, the corner over there.

I don’t see why. North England and South England isn’t collectively known as “The Englands.” It’s not the “United States of Americas.” So why should the whole land mass be known as “The Americas?”
The use of Americas is an anomaly.

not to be too pedantic, but england is only one country, where the americas are two continents.

What teflon said. And ‘The Americas’ just sounds retarded.

i can’t see kinnect doing better than move…just look at the games that are launching with kinnect, there all pants. ok some of the move’s launch titles were a bit lacking, but at least you don’t look like an absolute pratt when you play it.

I think Kinnect will do much better than Move, simply because of the installed user base and the unqualified argument that there are more casual Xbox users than there are hardcore Xbox users, and clearly the only Xbox user who will buy Kinnect is a casual dad trying to engineer some fun for his family.
Agreed, Kinnect games are awful, but look at who’s saying this, a bunch of rational minded males debating on a games website. We’re a minority. Too many casual, uninformed, Xbox as standard, families out there for Kinnect to do worse than Move.

Kinnect will easily do better than Move, MS has a larger fan base and has a much better marketing team.

I’m with Gazza on this. MS have a bigger marketing team, while sony seems to have a team made up of childrens. Whether the kinect will be commonly praised or slated by the Video games community upon release remains to be seen.

I don’t think Sony even have a marketing team. All I’ve seen of Move was a few adverts on the side of buses, while Kinect seems to be mentioned everywhere.

agree with general consensus. Kinnect will out sell move. That are both flawed but I do enjoy my move.
In terms of thesixaxis I’ve never heard anyone excited for the kinnect. Is there anyone there and if so what are you looking forward to and why? Would be interested in hearing some positive comments for a change.

To be honest, I do know someone making a mention about buying Kinect for his kids, but I can’t remember who it was.

Pretty sure it was 1 million shipped not sold. Although it’s basically sold out everywhere in the US, meaning they’re the same thing in this example :-p

So they’re close to 3 million sold after a month? That’s pretty good. I really don’t see Kinect selling as many and it wouldn’t be a fair comparison anyway; some people buy 2-4 move controllers each.

Might be interesting to see if launching a product before the spending review here in the UK makes a difference. I know this only effects the UK and we don’t make up the whole global market, however many people i speak to are cutting back and are worried about money following Wednesday’s announcements, could splashing £130 out in one go put people off now they have other things on their mind? i mean we all have to watch the pennies these days but at the start of October we didn’t really know what shape these cuts would take, now we do it might effect our spending habits more?
Sorry to get all political but it might make a difference to how successful the launch in the UK is. MS will throw everything at it no doubt and i am sure the figures will be as good if not better then Move, the real test now for both platforms is to bring the games that people want to play, and add something different to them. For me so far Sony have laid out a pretty good plan of games for all tastes, although most will hit next year, MS have yet to show us a broad range of games for the casual to the hardcore. Looks like 2011 will be all about motion…. wait didn’t Nintendo do that in 2008?

As long as Echochrome 2 comes out soon for me it was a good investment. I personally hope that the Kinect does sell well, healthy competition to encourage Sony pull their finger out for the Move can’t be a bad thing. It will be interesting to see what 2011 brings.

Its inevitable that kinect will sell more than move initially, there is the bigger install base, but I can’t see kinect making more people go out and buy an xbox to use it. Whereas I can see the move shifting more consoles for Sony.
