Black Ops’ Enhancements

After what seems like a whole summer dominated by Medal Of Honor’s Taliban shenanigans, (anyone would think they did it on purpose) the info surrounding Call Of Duty: Black Ops is finally coming thick and fast.

In the past week alone we’ve had a look behind the scenes at the multiplayer balancing that Treyarch has carried out, then came the news that Treyarch’s self-moderation had kicked in when the bog standard violence turned into lashings of the old ultra-violence. Before that, we heard how Blacks Ops will be the biggest gaming release ever, before an analyst said that the press surrounding the title could scupper this.

In a posting on the official blog, Treyarch’s community manager Josh Olin has talked about some enhancements in the PS3 version of Black Ops.

Custom Games Editor.
Gives hosts the ability to customise every single aspect of the game right down to the mode, score and time limits to the weapons or perks available. This can be saved in your File Share so your friends or the community can browse and download it.

Friends List Enhancements.
The PS3 fiends list has been integrated in to the Black Ops user interface, so rather than a simple list of fiends appearing as is the norm, within Black Ops you’ll be able to browse Recent Players, Friends, navigate their File Shares, Recent Games, Combat Records – all within this in-game menu system designed to streamline the social process within the game. Sending game invites and joining Friends’ games has never been simpler.

Regional Matchmaking & Party Privacy.
As you’d expect from such a customisable experience, it’s possible to add filters to matchmaking for global, regional and local games. In addition, it will now be possible to join games in progress via the new friends list interface rather than having to sit it out in the lobby. The party leaders will also be able to lock down games to invite only, friends only or even closed.

The big win for the PS3, is obviously the friends list enhancements, this builds on the work done in Modern Warfare 2 which was the first (and still one of the few) PS3 games to use cross-game invites. The manipulation of your friends and recently played list along with being able to browse their stats and file shares is a pretty nifty feature that we look forward to trying out when the game is released on November 9th.

Note: The headline on this article has been changed to reflect the fact that a lot of this info also relates to the Xbox 360 version of the game. The fact that this article was sourced from the PS blog is reflected in its leaning towards that console. Apologies for any confusion!

  1. “The PS3 fiends list has been integrated in to the Black Ops user interface, so rather than a simple list of fiends appearing as is the norm”

While most of my friends are fiends, most are very sensitive about it and prefer I don’t refer to them as such.

  2. really like there’s a Custom Game Editor now, will be much easier to organize specific things then saying shotguns only done a microphone

  3. I think the title is a little bit misleading as presumably these functions will also be in the xbox version as well?

I have pre-ordered this and can’t wait! Bring on the 9th!

  4. I’d say the custom game editor was the best bit of this news.
They probably did this to cater for people who wanted just throwing knives, or just quick – scoping. As long as it keeps them happy.
Does this mean though, searching for a game will be more like Killzone?

    • Nah, i’m sure this will only be for private matches. They same way they’ve been in previous COD games just with more options. To play “Ranked” matches i’m sure it’ll be the same “pick a playlist and lets go” formula that has made matchmaking in COD a lot more streamlined than other shooters.

    • Can’t quick scope anymore though can you? I read that slight of hand pro (or it’s equivalent) is not applicable to sniper rifles anymore and they have increase the animation time between you aiming and the sniper shot being central. you definitely can’t drop shot anymore.

  5. This just shows how much Treyarch are trying to make this game as good as possible. They’re listening to what the players want and adding new stuff to boot. Good on them and keep it up.

  6. It quite good having Perk limited games, once all the fanfare has died down these may be more popular than normal games.

Manipulating friends list and recently played players and providing social features to such an extent is also great work

    • Barebones wasn’t that popular a playlist on Modern Warfare 2 (no perks/kill streaks). This extra level of customistation might be more popular though.

  7. Can you confirm if this is a list of ps3 exclusive features?

They also mention online spliscreen in the blog post. That is surely the greatest enhancement.

    • They’re not.

And there was an earlier post about online split screen.

  8. Guys MAG Escalation is out 3rd November, was on PS Blog. Please post!

  9. If the custom games is anything like Halo then I might actually buy this.

  10. Getting this game is out of my hands as my brother is getting it. I’ll get to see all the new features and see how much of an improvement it is when I play for myself and ultimately [as I probably won’t go online for long] when I watch my brother play. I seem to like online more when I am not the one playing :)
