Nuketown’s Secrets Revealed

Whilst Black Ops has been breaking sales records, single-handedly propelling game sales in the UK to their best week ever, some people have been uncovering some secret and not-so-secret Easter eggs in one of the most popular multiplayer maps, Nuketown.

Handily, Activision’s social media manager, Dan Amrich has rounded them all up and posted them on his blog. Oh, and before anyone comments on the graphics looking fake, it’s supposed to look fake as it is a fake-town designed for nuclear testing, fresh from the 60s.

Double Rainbow
20m people have so far seen and had a laugh at the YouTube video where someone gets a little too excited about seeing a real double rainbow. This is Treyarch’s tribute to that.

The Black Ops Jeep
A while ago, we saw the limited edition 2011 Jeep Wrangler ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops Edition’ was fitted out with Black Ops graphics and road busting 32″ tyres. Well, here it is in the game. Just mind the paintwork.

Oblivion Intersection
History buffs may have noticed something familiar with a couple of the street signs in Nuketown, that’s because Trinity is the name of the very first atomic bomb test and Operation Latchkey was the name given to a series of tests through the 60s.

Who Lives In A house Like This
If you’ve made your way through the campaign then you’ll be fully aware of the antics of Alex Mason and Frank Woods, but I bet you didn’t wonder what their houses were like. Now you can go through the keyhole and have a sneaky look in their drawers. Just make sure you knock first.

Census Time
Just in case you were wondering how many people were playing in your matchup, the handy population counter on the Welcome To Nuketown lets you know. No quitting now, else everyone will be able to see.

The Doomsday Clock
Wondering what the time is? The clock in Nuketown won’t be able to help you out, as it displays how long is left until the end of the round. We all know what happens in Nuketown when the clock runs down, don’t we? Tip: BOOOOM!

RC-XD Shortcuts
Go on, admit it – you’ve been killed more than a few times by opponents’ RC-XDs (remote controlled car rigged with explosives). Nuketown features some handy shortcuts so you can let your Killstreak loose on the world. Not only that but it lets you drive it around an area that you can’t get to yourself and it even includes a jump ramp. Pro tip: Nuketown isn’t the only map to feature RC-XD shortcuts.

Moving Mannequins
We’ve all been there, spying a shadowy figure at a window. Quick, line them up in your sights and pull the trigger. Hang-on, that’s not an opponent, its just a dummy. It’s no good learning the locations of these mannequins either as they’ll have changed positions almost every time you fire the game up.

Damn Mannequins!
OK, so you’ve had enough of the mannequins and you want to blow them to pieces? There was a rumour that if you blew the head off every mannequin then something would happen. Thanks to the magic of YouTube we get to the see that surprise, which is to have Rolling Stones’ Sympathy For The Devil play out across Nuketown. You will have to get both sides working together to accomplish the task though, as it will be a near impossibility by yourself or whilst being shot at.

  1. Games in general need more Easter eggs. Things like the double rainbow and the Mannequins (although the secret is a bit dull) should feature everywhere. It’s great when you’re in a game and notice something that makes you go “wow, that’s cool. I’m glad they took a small part of their time to incorporate this” Eggs Pwease game devs!

    • Yes, more cultural, historical or pop culture references in games that make you stop & smile for half a second

  2. Can’t wait to take my RC-XD for a spin on the other side of the fence :P

    • Me too, will be trying to find the shortcuts on the other maps too, so I don’t stand in front of them.

  3. Love Nuketown, gonna look at these in game :D

  4. Who ever thought that finding mannequins alone could be so hard?

  5. Games need alot more Easter Eggs, so much fun

  6. Easter Eggs are the reason I love Just Cause 2 so much =D

  7. Since the river boat mission, I love Sympathy For The Devil.
If these are just the secrets for Nuketown, I hope the other maps have some too!

  8. Saw the double rainbow and the shortcut straight away only tried to use it once though got my car stuck so didn’t try again lol. Didn’t know about any of the others though, they are pretty cool.

  9. I think games these days lack little things like this. I fondly remember that evey single MGS had many easte eggs dotted about which were fun to find. The question is if every game had hidden bits, would people start demanding there be trophies for finding them….?

  10. I love things like this, Arkham Asylum impressed me the most with the hidden room that wasn’t found for months and months after release. Bit of a stupid question here, but how are the people diving in the video? I have noticed others doing it but haven’t been able to figure it out.
