First it was delayed, then delayed again, then delayed a bit more, finally turned yesterday and now it’s stuck in traffic. You couldn’t make it up, you really couldn’t.

Sony has announced that Gran Turismo 5 is ‘experiencing some extreme online traffic congestion’ and the best way to play the game is.. offline. Yes, really. Here is the full statement from Sony.

Currently the online services of Gran Turismo 5 (GT5) is experiencing some extreme online traffic congestion.

Because GT5 performs online access not only when participating in online races and using community features, but also when starting the game and during the various screen displays in GT Mode, unfortunately this online congestion is also affecting standard gameplay.

If you are experiencing the following symptoms, we recommend that you temporarily play GT5 without connecting the PlayStation 3 (PS3) to the network.

(A) If you are finding it takes several minutes before being able to perform any actions in the following screens:

- Before the start of the opening movie, immediately after launching the game
- At the top screen after the game has started
- In various screens within GT Mode

(B) Or, when it takes several minutes or more to gain a result when the following operations are performed:

- When entering the open lobby, if it takes several minutes or more before the room list is acquired and displayed.
- When clicking on an ID in the participant list of a room, if it takes several minutes or more before the menu appears.
- When writing on the message boards within “Community”, if it is taking several minutes or more for your posts to appear.

* Also, some of the following features have been limited intentionally as a measure to temporarily alleviate some of the network traffic. Due to these limitations, you will find that:
- The viewing and update of the [Log] in the Community section of GT Mode has been temporarily disabled.
- Changes to the Profile may not update in some cases.
- Changes to the Friend List may not update in some cases.

Currently we are simultaneously working on several different solutions to improve the network status and alleviate the network congestion as soon as possible. We are expecting to be able to provide a proper online service again soon.

We sincerely apologize to our customers for the inconvenience.

    They’re recalling the game?

  2. A lot of games launch with online problems so it’s not really a biggie, but Sony can’t honestly say they’re surprised by GT5′s popularity? All that time though, and some simple code optimisation never crossed their minds?

A quick patch is needed to reduce the network timeout to 2-10secs rather than the ridiculous 2-3mins it currently is, shouldn’t be a problem but I’d have thought they’d want to catch a range of things in one patch rather than lots of little things in loads of patches.

    • Much like Black Ops’ congestion, I don’t quite understand why juggernaut-sized franchises can’t see this coming. Actually, they can. Why don’t they allow for it? There simply MUST be a way for them to scale up and down the requirements of the network. This is how the internet works, for god’s sake. :-\

      • Well, a year ago MW2 broke the whole of the PSN as the never before seen volume of network traffic took out something called a ‘presence server’ and we had to wait nearly 24 hrs for SCEJ to upgrade it, the congestion and poor PSN performance carried on for about another week until at least 2 MW2 patches had been launched.

BlOps has disconnection issues even the evenings, but I haven’t played it since I picked up NFSHP so I don’t know if that’s eased.

Pretty sure server optimisation and a (hopefully soon) patch will rectify the issues.

One thing that shouldn’t have took Sony by surprise though is GT popularity.

    • Its ridiculous that everytime you go into a new menu there’s a 2 or 3 min delay while it tries to connect to the network. If it doesn’t connect first time it shouldn’t try again unless you try to do an online race.

      • Exactly, that’s an example of plain & simple bad code, the timeout should be 10secs not 3mins.

Easily sorted with a patch, which could probably be written up within a day, I just wonder if they’ll adopt a thorough patch which takes longer but picks up on a variety of things rather than lots of little patches.

      • I’d say it’s more of a threading problem. You should never have a frequently used menu where you need to wait for network input every single time you visit it. What they should do is have a network thread in the background trying to load, while on a different thread it displays the menu, without the info brought up by networking (or even displaying a cached version of the last time you went on the menu), once the thread is done, you can update the screen. Hell, alot of people would leave the screen before it even updates, meaning the game could send a cancel command over the network, tell the server not to bother processing your request… alleviating some of the congestion.

It’s actually quite simple especially in a PS3 game, since you’ve gotta have pretty robust threading support.

  3. Its understandable, im sure it will be ok over time

  4. Hope it will be fixed soon, as I had much problems playing the game yesterday evening

  5. The congestion isn’t that unexpected, but so many games get hit with this now I’m no surprised. What surprises me is that it’s hitting SP performance, not cool Sony.

    • Exactly, you kind of half expect online problems with a major new release at first now but it shouldn’t be affecting the single player game at all.

  6. There were problems on Tuesday which I put down to being pre-launch. I only connected it yesterday afternoon and then last night it got laggy again so I disconnected. To be honest, I am ok with offline for at least a few days, there is plenty of content!
I suppose they really should have be prepared though

    • Yes they should have been more prepared. Surely Sony would have had some idea of the number of copies sold on launch as, I suspect, most were pre-orders.

  7. GT5 massively popular – who’d have thought?

I’v managed only a couple of online races but they are very sweet when working!!

Overall have been loving reconnecting with that unique Gran Turismo feeling!

    Here’s to a patch soon…

  8. Are they going to charge a £5 a day congestion charge to eliviate traffik? :)

I had 13 people in my freinds list playing it last night, way more than when CoD BlOps game out.

    • Or will they make us use public transpor? *shudders*

Yeah everyone on my friends list that was online last night was on it(about 10 people)- very popular.

  10. I’m sorry, people may argue otherwise, but this is simply unacceptable. I was going to buy this at the weekend, but now i’m not unless they fix it before then. This is one of the most anticipated game releases of all time. It’s been in development for 6 years. Just not acceptable. The exact same thoughts i have about black ops. The online on that is dreadful. Disconnecting constantly. It’s not my network connection that’s at fault, all other games i’ve ever owned have been fine, and it’s a widely reported issue. Sad state of affairs from both development teams.

    • Same for me – i think i may wait until after xmas now, and get it with a steering wheel.

On the note of Blops – i consistently have the same issues, to the point where i am beginning rtto wish i hadn’t bought it. I am hopeful however that the SP campaign will redeem the overall package

      • For BlOps,

I’m following the Twitter feed of the game director at Treyarch
        http://twitter.com/DavidVonderhaar

It’s extremely insightful in to the huge amount of work the team is doing… hotfixing some issues happens all the time,
I’m not up to date on the fixes for peak-time disconnect issue, but looking at how thorough he is about everything, I’d say it will be sorted before too long

    • Ah, tits. Didn’t read your reply. 100% agreed. Much like a rotund valley girl on a Friday night – you can’t help but see this coming from a mile off. Silly buggers. :-\
