MCV have been speaking to “high-level sources” regarding the worst kept secret in the world – the PSP2.
As reported yesterday they are saying that a January 27 reveal is on the cards with further information coming at GDC and E3. In what seems like a good move, Sony are aiming to get the device on shelves for Christmas (possibly as early as October), and the hand-held will support physical media as well as digital downloads which means we get the best of both worlds; real HD games we can sink our teeth into, along with bite sized gems such as Cut The Rope, and Angry Birds.
One of the most interesting things in the article is that “Sony has told licensees the device ‘is as powerful as the PlayStation 3’.” If this is correct it would be mind-blowing, assuming the battery that comes with it is up to the task.
Whether you favour Nintendo or Sony, now is a great time to be into handheld gaming.

Anyone want to buy a PSP-1003 (?) with several games?!! Lol

Sony appear to have learned very little from what went “wrong” with the first one. Sure, have impressive hardware but for god’s sake keep the price reasonable and promote it like never before.

There’s been no info on price or how they will advertise yet so how can you say that?
The few things we seem to know so far is that it will be powerful, have 2 analogue sticks, probably a track pad on the back, have a touch screen and probably support downloaded games and those on some form of disc. We don’t really know anything about the games that we’ll see on it so what didn’t they learn?
Sony have 2 choices:
1. Go after the “iphone crowd” with either a phone or somthing closer to the itouch.
2. Go for a different audience and make the PSP2 stand out from other handhelds and current phones.
Will people buy a handheld and own an iphone? Probably not so it will need to offer things that the iphone doesn’t or can’t. If they can’t do that they need a device that will replace peoples iphones. That will be even harder.
Sony will have looked at the most popular (and biggest selling) games on the PSP and come up with a list that includes God of War, MGS Peace walker, Monster Hunter, Ratchet and Clank, Fifa etc… and focused the PSP2 on that.
Most of the DS’ biggest sellers were Wii or gamecube clones as well like Mario Kart, Mario & sonic at the olympics etc… and the 3DS looks like going the same way.

If it truely is as powerful as a PS3 or even close, its going to cost an excess of £500!!!!!
Think about it, the PS3 launched at around £400 and now they’ve fitted it into a handheld so its going to cost even more, just like laptops and desktops. I hope it is great but in the end th price has to be at least sort of reasonable or won’t stand a chance in todays market.

how much will this thing run for?

As powerful as the PS3? Is that even possible?

PSP wasnt far off PS2 performance and came a similar length of time after the birth of that console iirc. AFAIK The lower resolution display helps, as you’re shunting around less visual information. If my understanding is right then in order to shunt around a similar quality of image on (for arguements sake) a screen 1/3 the resolution then you only need around 1/3 the processing grunt. I could be very wrong though :)
