Despite being one of the most popular PlayStation 3 games of all time, there were a lot of people that thought Killzone 2′s controls were not up to par. Guerrilla listened, and they made it one of their top priorities when going in to Killzone 3.  While some people chalked it up to the ‘weighty feel’ that Killzone is known for, Guerrilla themselves has said it was more than just that.  While speaking to Edge Magazine, Game Director, Mathijis de Jonge, had this to say on the subject.

“[The] thing with Killzone 2 was there were some quite technical problems in the controls, actually, and I think we’ve solved those now.

[While] we were still tweaking and checking framerate, I checked this game back-to-back with Killzone 2 and have to say that it plays so much more fluidly. Also, the adjustments we made to lean-and-peek – you can actually slide into cover now, vault over, brutally melee your enemies – it feels more fluid, stutters less. There’s fewer points of irritation.”

While a lot of people immediately dropped Killzone 2 because of the way it handled, I personally liked it and would hate nothing more than to see it lose the feeling that made it seem unique among other shooters.  Luckily, Guerrilla says that they’ve tried to preserve the original experience, although they have confessed to ditching some of the extra weight.

“There was a lot of lag… by fixing those issues we’ve lost a bit of that weighty feeling. We’ve tried to maintain that original experience, but if we’d kept it as slow, we’d run into the danger of losing some people, moving too far away from our competitors”

Mathijis also took the time to mention the single player experience and how they’ve worked hard to keep the locations varied and fresh. **Warning** Possible Spoilers Below!

“We’re going from the Helghast interpretation of jungle to very Killzone-esque scrapyards, and at the end we go into space. It’s a big departure from Killzone 2, where the first five levels were all urban settings.”

Killzone 3 is only just over a month away so you won’t have to wait long to see first hand what Mathijis is talking about.

  1. I liked the feel of the controls in the KZ3 beta, suited me very well. Not too weight as KZ2 was for me (although I still really liked it) and not too twitchy like CoD either (or the recent CoD’s, anyway). Kind of like Battlefield, just the way I like it. Roll on next month!

    • i hope the barrel clunking noise that greeted us at the beginning of every game in beta has gone
as with every online mode, i hope for a general mute too

barrel clunking lol, all i could think of
if you’ve played the beta you’ll know what i mean

oh & bf controls, you hit the nail on the head, perfect

      • LOL it’s funny because at first I was like what the hell is this guy talking about, but I realized I heard it so much that I don’t even notice it anymore. It sounds like someone got pushed out the backdoor of a bar. I have no idea what that sound is even there for.

  2. kz2 just a tad to weighty for me, but was happy after so small sensitivity adjustments
like how it took a while to turn 180 & not floaty, cod immediately springs to mind
    weighted feel felt more realistic

i hope they havn’t moved too far away from original controls
a slight tweak, at least for me is most welcomed, again i just pray they havnt overdone it

  3. I have faith in Guerrilla and belive they’ve pulled it off. At least the beta felt nicer and more fluid than KZ2, which was a bit too slow when you had to turn around.

  5. I didn’t have a problem with the controls in KZ2, bit wierd that they’ve admitted that there were some actual technical glitches in the control system???

    • Guerrilla are known for their openness and humility. They know they made mistakes with KZ2. It’s still my favourite FPS on the PS3, however.

  6. I must be one of few that prefer the weight that kz2 had to it’s controls, made it more ‘real’ to me. That said, was in the mp beta of kz3 and loved it, still weighty but not slow, pretty much spot on ;) can’t wait!

  7. I’m a bit gutted they have changed the controls to be honest. I haven’t played the beta so I can’t comment on the new ones, I just hope it isn’t massively different.

Going by the comments above, it sounds like they have the mix just right. Fingers crossed they have.

    • It’s definitely not massively different. You notice the quicker response, but it does still feel like some weight is there. The iron sight aiming, which didn’t exactly make itself a necessity in KZ2, is the biggest difference in KZ3, in my opinion.

  8. sleeping on it, a control movement weight thats not as heavy as kz2 & not as light as bfbc
especially the helghast, you’d expect them to move a little heavie(than a reg military fps), exo armour n all
weapons also have a weighty appearance

  9. Really looking forward to this but may have not money to get it. Dead Space 2 or this and the demo/beta didn’t help matters
