New Official PS3 Media Remote On The Way

Sony is all about redesigning things, especially if it makes the object in question sleeker and/or more functional. They’ve done it to all of their major consoles, they just recently did it to the official PlayStation bluetooth headset and now it looks like they’re doing it to their first-party media remote for the PS3. Over on their Japanese site, Sony has detailed a new media remote that may take the place of the current model.

The new remote retains all of the functionality of the original but it adds the ability to sync it with multiple devices through an added IR emitter. If you have a Bravia TV, chances are you’ve already been using a similar function through ‘Bravia Sync’ but this remote will even allow you to pair it with non-Sony televisions.

We’re not yet sure when/if it will come to Europe or North America but it’s certainly not a stretch to imagine. The remote will be launching in Japan on March 31 for 3,600 yen. Check below for a pic of the seemingly Bravia themed remote.

  1. Looks pretty bad to be honest

    • bad as in good, or bad as in bad? If the latter, why? What’s wrong with it?

      • i guess he hasn’t seen a bravia remote. it’s bugly if you don’t consider they designed it to be like one.

      • Prefer the current one to be honest…. not feeling the love of this one.

      • I don’t see the point in this. Any remote designed to work on multiple devices will usually end up missing out functions as a result. Also, short of adding analogue nubs for internet surfing, which would be a little odd really, what could you add to the current remote?

    • I agree thats an ugly bit of kit.

why not just update the move to use play tv/blu rays more effectively with motion control?

  2. looks like any bravia remote, plus the ps buttons. not very creative imho

    • Why do we want it to be creative? Surely functionality is the key point? It does look like a Bravia remote, and surely that’s a good thing?

      • A few curves here and there, I like curves :)

  3. I just bought a universal remote for my tv so pass.

  4. The x and o and square and triangle buttons are not organized according to the move, confusing

    • That’s probably because it’s the Japanese design, you can see it says ‘Back’ above the X button and ‘View’ above the O button. An EU design would be reversed most likely.

      • Square button even, but you get my sleepy ramblings.

      • No thats the same layout as the Euro PS3 remote thats sold now.

      • Well my PS3 control has Circle as back, Square as view and Triangle as options. X doesn’t have anything above it but works as a select button.

  5. This looks ace! It’s basically a Bravia remote with full PlayStation functions – exactly what I need.

  6. might be tempted. I use the existing media remote the most as I have PlayTV. But I still have to have my tv and surround amp remotes to hand.

  7. I already have the Bluray remote for my ps3, and to be honest i probably should use it more than i do

  8. I actually prefer that other one you posted a while back, Matt.

    • Yeah, but the fact that this one is made by Sony almost immediately makes it more appealing. Third party accessories are such rubbish these days.

  9. Might have to invest in one – although its only a might as I am happy with my Pad tbh……….

  10. “Sony is all about redesigning things… They’ve done it to all of their major consoles”
Was there a PsOne Slim? :O
If so, I have never even heard of it :O

    • Yes, there was the original PlayStation, which then received a redesign towards the end of its life and was called the PSOne :o)

      • pwnd

      • PSX wasnt it (the first one)? and then the small psone

      • Haha! noob. Probably some 10 year old who wasn’t even born when the original PlayStation was around and thinks the PSOne was the first PlayStation haha!

      • That was supposed to be a reply to noobii.net btw

    • yeah there was, but Ithink it was called something else

      • yeah, I think there was another sony divice though that was caled PSX (in the ps2 era), thats why some get confused

      • First there was the original PlayStation as it was called, in 1999, the smaller PSOne came out. PSX came out 4 years later but was released in Japan only. The PSX looked like a white Xbox and it worked like a DVR. It played PS1 and PS2 games and it was the first Sony machine to introduce the XMB interface.

    • You just made me feel old… or informed. I’ll go with the latter. ¬.¬
