Watch Out Nintendo, iPhone Gets 3D Overlay

We seem to remember this being an April Fools joke on one particular industry site this year, but that hasn’t – apparently – stopped this from becoming reality.

Yes, someone’s invented a lenticular overlay screen to fit over your regular iPhone (or whatever) screen that transforms so-called side-by-side visuals into 3D, although we can only assume the illusion is broken when you actually try to use the phone by – you know – touching it.

Yep, still, that’s glasses-free, albeit at the expense of a slightly wobbly display and the fact that it’s a third party application, so software will have to be specially designed to make the most of the tech.

The developers are promising a 120 degree field of view, though, which is considerable better than the three or four degree view the 3DS requires.

  1. There’s loads of 3D sheets for the iphone now, Hasbro released a (rather bullky) 3D gadget in 2008.

  2. hahaha! Now i won’t feel so bad if my 3DS gets sold. I guess I don’t on technology sites enough, as this is the first one i’ve seen.

  3. HTC have a 3D phone, dunno how good it is

    • Do they? Oo. HTC are rather good, I’d be interested to see that.

    • It’s 3D video recording will suck like most of HTC devices, the sounds quality on HTC devices is pathetic.

Android isn’t meant to be 3D so you won’t see much 3D apps for it but 3D movies? Maybe.

  4. About £15 or less for the iphone so quite cheap but as it’s not a standard feature on every idevice developer support might not be huge.
… i wonder if they’ll make one for Vita.. :)

  5. i’d imagine you’d have to line it up on the screen pretty accurately for it to work well.
i’ve how those lenticular things can just not work at all of the overlay is misaligned.

  6. I wish they’d stop trying to show us the 3D in the video. WE have 2D monitors, it doesn’t work!!
