The PlayStation Network Store has long been a place to find some exclusive little gems. The diversity of the titles available is already impressive and a continually growing catalogue only makes the service stronger.
One place where the PSN Store has always had some strong offerings is in its exclusive range of titles. Everything from Super Stardust HD to Joe Danger via titles like Flower and the PixelJunk series. So it’s perhaps unsurprising to see that the PSN is reaffirming its commitment to funding great exclusive titles with a further $20 million investment over the next three years.
This investment should pave the way for further solid additions to the catalogue, including the upcoming Eufloria, Okabo and Papo & Yo which will all be making their appearances on the PSN Store soon.

I could quite happily just play nothing but PSN (and XBLA) games.

I have to agree with you there, there’s been some great stuff this generation, which would never have seen the light of day as a retail product.

Agreed. Limbo, Joe Danger and Lara Croft: GoL were probably my three most played games last year. The quality of games on the PSN/XBLA stores seem to get better and better each year.

I hope this funds Hello Games’ second game. Joe Danger is fantastic!

Are there any sites dedicated to just PSN titles? I have loved most of the ones I’ve picked up (SSHD, Dead Nation, Wipeout, Deathspank: ToV, Shatter, Echochrome and the likes) but my problem is I feel like I don’t really hear about them as often as I do the retail games.

Of course all the best ones are reviewed right here on TSA but as they try to cover a broad range of games here it’s impossible for them to review every game released. You could try pspminis.com (just minis) or psnstores.com (just psn games, i think).

Amen to that (especially if one considers inFAMOUS 2 (Digital) a PSN game).

I always think XBLA always gets the better exclusives (Trials HD for one), and they seem to get the timed exclusives too (Limbo, From Dust etc) Hopefully, this investment will bring some decent games to the table, not bothered if they’re exclusive or not, I just want to see more great games on PSN.

I would have initially agreed but seeing PSN exclusives like the entire PixelJunk games, Wipeout, Flower, Flow, Journey (soon), Limbo (soon), etc. I’d say it’s well balanced. If anything I feel the quality is slightly higher although XBLA has more variety to choose from.

Yeah but you have to give props to MS for starting this trend on consoles in the first place ;)

That’s one big extension to the ‘pub fund’:

(Coincidently, that was one of my last news tips before Alex told me not to be so lazy and to write the stories myself.)

I got Eufloria in the steam sale, it’s beautiful. Only started playing it today and I’ve done 9 hours already.
Minimalistic, flOw-esque visual design coupled with a relatively simple but enjoyable RTS mechanic, it’s just brilliant. The UI and controls are superb too (on computer at least) this is a must buy.
Playing this on a Full HD TV will be an experience not to be missed, a definite buy from me.

Awesome news! I’ve been mainly playing PSN games these days because of their quality and originality, so to find that there will be more quality content to look forward to is great. I wonder when Microsoft will learn by changing their XBLA policies and start supporting some creativity…

Er… Xbox live already has the Indie games channel.
There’s over 1,600 independently published games on there. If that’s not supporting creativity, then I don’t know what is!
I’ve also bought some ace games off there including the amazing Cthulhu saves the world: http://youtu.be/56fG6fFqubA

Good point, but the quality of the output is terrible generally, although there are a few great games. When i got my Xbox 360 last autumn, i looked through them all, and some seem like jokes about games that no-one should make, except they somehow exist.

Unfortunately it’s the same everywhere. Most user created/indie apps on the Apple store, Android store and Blackberry store are absolute pants too! I wish they employed a bit more quality control.
The indie game channel can be a good way to get a cheaper knock-off of an already established game. This is a good website for Indie game reviews but I think they’re often a bit too lenient: http://www.xboxindies.com/

what i’d like is to see them set up some sort of indie program like ms has, and like they had way back on the ps1.
it would potentially mean a lot of new and unique content, and a way for those who want to create homebrew apps to do so in an officially sanctioned way, without the need to hack the console.
and potentially make some money with very little outlay on their part.

Something like the minis initiative? (Cheap dev kit + potential to sell your game for both PSP and PS3 if it’s any good.) They should totally do something like that. :-)
The Net Yaroze was hardly “very little outlay”. IIRC it was more than twice the launch cost of the console, so the €1,200 that PSP dev kits have cost for the last few years is in the same ballpark.
iPhone development-like affordability (if you already have an iPhone) or an XNA-style software only solution (if you already have an Xbox 360) are unlikely. They both also have a $99(?) annual subscription requirement which adds up. I do not know if Sony require an annual fee. There are almost certainly fees involved with PSN Store submissions though.

iOS and 360 development is so cheap because those respective companies have PC platforms that run from the same tech (iOS is Mac OS X underneath, and the Xbox runs Windows Embedded with DirectX-driven graphics), and therefore coding and testing is possible straight on those systems, unlike with the PS3 that requires external development kits.

i never knew the price of the yaroze kit.
but surely sony could offer a low cost solution for the ps3.
i have no idea what it would take to set up a program like that for the ps3, but i do know the 360 indie program has produced some pretty decent titles, along with a hell of a lot of crap.
i’d just think the ps3 could use a similar way for indie developers to get their content on ps3.
i think it would be good for the ps3.
if they don’t do it for the ps3, then at least the vita or the ps4, whenever that comes out, could use it.
