Insomniac has developed the home console Resistance franchise since it was a high point in Sony’s early PS3 content offerings. Although the second game had some detractors among hardcore fans, it sold well and proved generally popular. The third is due out soon and has been getting all sorts of quiet praise from anyone who has been lucky enough to have early access to it.

In an interview with Gaming Union, Resistance’s Creative Director, Marcus Smith has spoken about the possibilities of the franchise being handed off to another developer.

Nihilistic is already doing a [Resistance] Vita game, which is going to be awesome. We really respect those guys as game developers. Sony Bend did Resistance Retribution on PSP. We’ve got a lot of different places for the universe to go, so I could certainly see the series going to another developer. I’m sure Sony would want to find a high caliber developer to do a good offering.

With Insomniac’s recent move into multiplatform development, perhaps this was inevitable but we’re struggling to see what studio Sony might have that is available to work on the franchise. Insomniac is not due to move on to Resistance 4, a game which must surely happen, so who will take the reins?

  1. ahh that’s quite disappointing. I think Isomniac have done a great job with the Resistance series, and the third looks to be the best of the lot at the moment. Wonder who would take the series on?

    • I strongly disagree with you. I feel that after R1, which was amazing, Insomniac completely lost their way with the franchise and developed a terrible storyline all about saving the US, and because they’ve decided to make a multiplatform game i wonder if it has distracted them from R3 development. Because they were boasting at the beginning of the year that the game was all but finished, but only a month or two from release the game looks awful and the multiplayer is a buggy mess. I’m glad they’re leaving it. give it to someone who will do a better job.

      • I haven’t played the any Resistance 3 multiplayer yet, but if it is a buggy mess at the moment its probably because its a beta. The beta is there so the bugs can be identified and fixed before release.

    • i’m with the killer on this one. very sad about it. great work insomniac. R1 was the game that got me into gaming

      • jaffa i can see your reasoning, they did lose the plot a bit with R2 but i still enjoyed the single player. Also i agree that they might get sidetracked on new projects. But as rht as said R1 was the game that got me into the PS3

  2. Resistance is definately a series I seem to have lost interest in over the years. The first one was awesome (I could easily put the game in my ps3 right now and play it straight through), but I found the second one lacking in almost every aspect. I had high hopes for R3 but I played the beta for literally 2 hours and have had no incentive to play it since. Insomniac should stick to great games like the R&C series imo :)

    • I feel exactly the same about the R3 Beta. Although I’ve not played R1 or R2 I like the look of R3 (single player) as it reminds me a lot like Half Life 2, and if the level design is even close it’ll be great. Trouble is I didn’t really like how the MP handled, or looked in places, however it is a Beta and I suspect some things have been dulled down for it to run better (perhaps) so I’ll wait for the reviews before deciding whether or not to cancel my preorder! :)

I’m looking for any reason not to start investing in new IPs what with all the good games due out in the coming months (and my backlog), so the reviews will have to be 9/10 or higher for me to invest I think.

      • My reference to the handling/looks in MP raised my concerns of how this might be in SP. Hopefully SP will be better

lol, I’d be lying if I said this wasn’t part of the reason I’m giving R3 a miss until its cheaper. There are simply far too many games coming out from now until December for me to pick up ones I’m not 100% sure on. I would imagine the only purchases I make before Xmas will be Resi4 HD and Batman, then my wife is getting me Uncharted3 as an early xmas pressie I believe :)

      • I know what you mean…I’ve got Fifa 12, Dead Island, Uncharted 3, MW3, BF3, Ico & SotC, MGS HD, Renegade Ops, R3 all on preorder. I’ve cancelled Driver as I didn’t like either demo, and I cancelled Rage as I think Fallout New Vegas and Borderlands give me enough wasteland gaming for now! I’ve also decided against Skyrim as I wasn’t a huge Oblivion fan (don’t like the melee combat). So I’m sort of hoping R3 will be 8/10 so I can justify avoiding it! So many games to choose from, and so little time!! Lol

      • @Forest_01: lol, thats me screwed then :D

@Youles: I think my list of pre-orders was that size initially but I’ve found myself cancelling more and more of them, not because the games don’t look terrific, just I won’t be in my Wife’s good books if I spend that much on gaming in such a short space of time lol. The way I look at it is there is nearly always a lull in new releases after Xmas so I can start to play catch up then :)

      • Don’t worry, i’m in the same boat!

I’ll just buy my own gifts! Sod santa! :D

      • I hope you’re right – then I can use the new year to catch up with all those games!!! I’m hoping my wife will buy her own copy of Dead Island, so that’s a game I can play co-op with her whilst spending “quality time”! :)

      • When did a 8/10 review score become a reason to avoid a game?

      • When there are so many other games that will undoubtably score 9/10 or 10/10 that I already have on preorder. I didn’t say 8 was bad, I have plenty of games that have scored that or lower. It’s just a process of elimination

      • Well I prioritize my games judging from my opinion. I wouldn’t buy a game that scores a 10 (or if I think it will be a 9 or 10) and ditch a game that I know I will enjoy more because it only scored a 7. If I based most of my purchases on review scorecards I’d be sitting at home with Killzone and Batman which I don’t really enjoy playing. It all comes down to taste and review scores don’t matter at all. If a 9/10 lists something as a con that would totally ruin the experience for you but a 8 game has cons that you don’t really care about the descission would be quite simple, right? That’s why for me scores and asumed scores don’t matter at all. :)

      • I totally agree with what you’re saying, but with preorders I can’t go by what I’ll enjoy as I can’t play them before hand. With R3 I did play the Beta and though it was average, but seeing as I’m interested in the SP I’ll check the reveiws. I don’t have infinite funds so sometime I will go by the reviews, videos, opinions of others, at least until I get to play it myself. I may well pick up R3 later if I think the review is not going to suit my taste (also, I’d read several reviews – it’s more about the content of the review, not the score – that’s what I should have said). I’m hoping there will be a SP demo, and the reviews are good, then I won’t cancel my preorder! :)

    • I agree in some parts R4U,

Resistance 2 (despite the fantastic co-op) was a let down. Now, I’ve never been a huge fan of Resistance’s online play but when I tried the beta I really liked it. In fact, it has tipped me over the edge and I probably will buy R3 thanks to its multiplayer.

      • It certainly feels different to the previous 2 games. I would imagine for every current Resistance fan that is put off by the new approach a newcomer will take their place :) I personally prefer the big 64player battles seen in the originals but hey thats just me

  3. Saw this coming as soon as Insomniac announced they would be working on multi-platform titles. Though I suspect they will still hold on to Ratchet and Clank, in the competitive FPS genre it would be easier to let Resistance go and work on other IPs instead.

If Nihilstic or Bend picked up Resistance then great for them, at the end of the day we as gamers are also winners. We get the same quality one would expect form Insomniac and a studio that Sony will no doubt take more interest in and allow to flourish.

  4. I still think that Resistance Fall of Man is one of the best games I’ve played this gen. My only gripe with the 2nd game was the removal of the Co-op campaign. I cannot see any logical reason to remove it and replace it with repetitive Online Co-op modes where no one co-operated.

It still hasn’t stopped me pre-ordering the 3rd one though.

    • I was really shocked when coop campaign (R1 coop was one of the most enjoyable playthroughs this gen) wasn’t included and the coop missions that replaced it were dreadful.

      • Haha I knnow. I never would have thought a developer could make co-op not enjoyable but Insomniac nailed it in R2 ;)

      • As soon as you add leveling up and better perks for doing so, all co-op goes out the window and it’s every man for themselves online. Another reason why Local co-op will always be Number 1 for me.

Brink is one of the few games that has managed to bridge this with the way you earn XP in that game.

  7. I’m not a hardcore Resistance fan. I played through R1 in coop and loved it. Playing the campaign with a friend was tons of fun but in retrospect, I can’t really tell you what the story was about. I was pretty bummed that they removed the campaign coop from R2 but still enjoyed the campaign. Funny thing is, I still remember what R2′s story was about…
Guess it’s a good thing no to be a hardcore fan of any franchise, since those people are bound to get disappointed at some point when a sequel isn’t 100% what they hoped for.

  8. Sony, either buy Insomniac or completely remove them, because it seems that you really dont need them and they are happy to work on their own with little to no intention of helping you.

because im sick of constantly hearing about these disputes between the two.

  9. I loved the early R&C games and resistance 1, but resistance 2 and the latest R&C game have not been up to the standard they could have been. I’m not such a big fan of Insomniac anymore..

  10. If it goes to a different developer I won’t buy it. It just wouldn’t feel the same.
