PlayStation Network Being Renamed?

Well this is an interesting one.  A couple of people over at NeoGAF claim to have received an email from Sony that says, basically, that PSN accounts will become SEN accounts – Sony Entertainment Network.

“On February 8, 2012,” it says, “your PlayStation Network account will be renamed to a “Sony Entertainment Network” account or a ‘SEN account’ in conjunction with Sony Computer Entertainment’s PlayStation 3 system software and PlayStation Vita system software updates.”

It says this won’t be applied to PSP accounts “at this time”.

“For general purposes, this account change is a change in name only,” continues the email. “Your username or password will not change, nor are we asking you to change them. In accordance with this transition, some necessary naming changes will be made to the TOS and Privacy Policy.”

The email says the the transition is based on “Sony’s goal to enhance its unique digital entertainment offering” and says that “PlayStation Network will be aligned with Sony Entertainment Network.”

“This helps us get closer to our goal of establishing a global comprehensive network platform of services across games, movies, music and more, all accessible from one convenient account,” it concludes.

This would make sense (sens?), as you can manage your PlayStation devices over at the Sony Entertainment Network website, signing in with a PSN ID. If this does turn out to be true, would having one overarching account for TVs, Music and gaming be a good idea?

  1. Makes sense, why have a PSN/Qriocity account when you can access other services on other devices with it.

Let’s hope one it’s renamed SEN it doesn’t need the constant maintenance of the PSN, somehow.

    • as long as it keeps it protected maintenance does not bother me.

  2. I really wish we can be able to change our ID’s.

    • Why?

      • Because it’s obvious that he doesn’t like his current one?

      • But it doesn’t really matter does it?

      • We all have different priorities in life…

      • Why not? I choice my username as it reflected me then. Now I’d rather change it, but I can’t.

      • Most people had to compromise when they signed up. I’d love to try and see if ‘teflon’ is available, for example.

      • XxTeflon-EliteX-QuickScoper2012xX is available :P

      • ^^^^
        Genius!

  3. Makes me wonder if there is substance to the “Sony will be dropping the Playstation brand name” rumours also?

    • I can’t see them dropping the name for the hardware – everyone knows what Playstation is and a name would confuse people and more likely the new name would be crap. Sony Entertainment Box 4 anyone?

      • Yeah I think they would be crazy to drop it too, just remember reading about it on here…

      • Sony Entertainment Box… actually, it doesn’t sound that bad. Remember when Nintendo released a console called “NES”? Then the “SNES”? They stood for an identical meaning. The only problems are, the obvious one, which is the PlayStation brand name would be dead and buried and the public would be confused with this new “SEN”. And finally, “SEN” spelt backwards is “NES”.

      • The SEB 4 sounds pretty cool actually XD

      • I remember reading about this new 32 bit console called a ‘Playstation’ in the rumours pages of my Mege Drive magazine as a kid, and thinking what a bizzare name – obviously missing a really cool adjective like ‘Mega’ or ‘Super’ in the name. Now it’s completely ubiquitous. I couldn’t imagine Sony ever dropping such a globally recognised brand name like that…

      • Hey, back off people! Was my idea -rushes off to patent that name- :D

      • I simply couldn’t resist to suggest a name for the next gen supposing htat they could be ditching the PlayStation name: SENsation

      • @KB hey that’s a pretty neat idea!

  4. This is a very logical idea, and in line to Apple’s own ID that covers everything from iTunes to iCloud and GameCenter. Sony have several different accounts that all require signing up, so create a single seamless account could actually work for them. People don’t want to continuously create new accounts for things like Qriocity, so with one overarching network, more people will join these other services.

    • Why not just make these services let us sign in using our PSN account? I like the name PSN now

  5. Coolio…

  6. Will this name change affect the integrity and security of my PSN account? It’s just that Sony’s record for security – re: PSN Summer 2011 – isn’t that great, and any little change/chink in the armour may let those nasty hackers in again…

    • What happened in September 2011?

    • Huh, swear that said September! What happened in summer 2011?

      • Do you use your Playstation online?

      • Sony left their front door open at head office, a raccoon got in and caused all sorts of shenanigans with the network.

      • While it may have been summer like weather it wasn’t in the months so called summer (in EU).
Wasn’t it more like April/May? I assume that was TC’s point.

      • It was April, which isn’t summer. Sorry I’m in a shitty stupid mood today.

    • *Spring

  7. interesting

  8. PNIUM is the name I would have suggested, because the Playstation Network Is Undergoing Maintenance more often than not these days, it seems.

  9. I kind of like SEN. :)

  10. SEN doesn’t have that ring to it that PSN does. But I like the idea behind it, very SENsible idea.

    • People with a slight speech impediment have probably called it the SEN from day one! :O
