CCP Outlines DUST 514 Battlefield Mechanics

DUST 514 is one of those games that has been making the rounds for quite some time now, yet in reality, we know very little of how this hugely ambitious MMOFPS will materialise in the hands of its eager fanbase. We’re bound to hear more on the game as we continue to lurch towards this year’s E3 expo, CCP having kept the fire stoked for curious onlookers, its most recent post detailing its dynamic battlefield system.

Though incredibly dense in scale, there’s no hiding the fact that, despite the myriad of locations in which battles will take place, your going to be setting foot on familiar territory on numerous occasions. Buildings and natural structures will remain largely the same, though using DUST 514’s innovative command set-up will prevent players from occupying the same outposts every time they land on a planet’s surface.

At the beginning of each game, one player will take the helm as commander, who will then decide where to deploy mercenaries and supporting tactical structures. Though they won’t change the physical attributes of a battlefield, placing objective in different location will no doubt influence player habits. CCP also mentioned how orbital strikes can cause lasting damage on areas, the aesthetic impact carrying over to consequent matches.

  1. Woah woah……is this a bit like Starhawk’s Build and Battle system then?

    • it sounds similar to me, but on a bigger scale possibly? I’m definitely interested in this.

  2. even though i cant wait for the game to get here im also looking forward to the 1st expansion next year when they plan to introduce new battlefields and modes in their quest to make a unique battlefield for every planet in eve, massive undertaking to say the least

  3. Looking forward to this. Hopefully fulfills my Planetside 2 craving but on consoles. (I’ll play both.)

  4. Can. Not. Wait. Super excited for this and it’ll probably take over from Battlefield 3 for a while as my shooter of choice.
Just finished reading the prequel novel EVE: Templar One and it was awesome, it doesn’t tie into the game *too* much (can’t really say due to spoilers just in case someone reads it, but it does start to set up parts of this game) but an excellent read and the universe is simply amazing.
Take my goddamn money! Oh, wait… ;)

    • You already sound awfully decided. This game might as well score an average 6/10.

Wait & see is what I say.

      • I like plenty of games which only get a 6/10 and sometimes lower. If it’s a bad game I’ll be disappointed but it’s not the end of the world :)

  5. I’m interested. I’ll keep a mince pie on this.

  6. Yep I’m interested in this. I watched a few videos from the Eve fan fest showing it off. I was so impressed that I decided to re-activate my Eve account. Now I have Billions of isk and assets waiting to fund my own personal army >:D

    • :D I’ll get on the case and do the same, we should speak to the old crew too and find out if DS need soldiers for the ground war mate :)

    • I’ve considered reactivating for this too, but it’s been so long since I last played and it seems like the damn UI changes weekly since Incarna was released :D

      • I’ll probably have to get a new PC to do this, but am considering it seriously due to DUST and Shogun II. Would be interesting to get a neutral Sixthaxis corp going to fund our mercenary activities in DUST. Myself, Cure and no doubt yourself have a lot of friends in the EVE universe so this could be a good way for us to hit the ground running – assuming of course that DUST is as good as I hope. Be fun to get back into the racing scene if that’s still going.

      • Well, I have an old Motherboard and CPU with a graphics card, an ide HDD, and dvd drive I’m not using anymore. They should be good enough for Eve (runs windows 7 OK). You’d need RAM (DDR2) a case, monitor, and keyboard/mouse. Just remember that running a PC is always a bit of a fight :P

2 years since I last logged in. It turns out missile boats are now “meh” for mission running, so I’ve had to start getting my long neglected gunnery skills up to scratch. As well as Gallente/Binmatar battleships. (still refuse to fly laser ships)

But apparently all the guns/vehicles etc in Dust are player entities that start out in the Eve universe, so I should have enough assets to bank roll myself (and a few others if anyone is interested) from day one. Not to mention being able to provide my own orbital strikes :P

      • Cool, I’ve got monitors and peripherals etc so that sounds great bro, I’ll give you a bell later, shame about missile boats, Really did love that Drake of mine. Be interested to see the direction you take with your gunnery, guess your shield skills would sit best with a Rokh or Minmatar ships, whilst your partial training in Hybrids would lean towards Gallente. How are your drone skills?

      • lol, “Binmatar”. Been too long since all of those old jokes about half finished ships with scaffolding still attached, and accidentally being salvaged. Good times.

      • Lol, actually “Binmatar” was a complete typo! I guess it may count as a Freudian slide….

Missile boats are still adequate, just not as all powerful as they used to be for PVE stuff. My Core skills are pretty good, it’s just the specific racial skills that are lacking. So it shouldn’t take too long to refocus. Thinking of a Machariel, hence the Min/Gal mix. Drone skills are my worst damage skill.

If you’re gonna call me Jiko, best to do so on my mobile. Snooker is on so chances are I’ll have unplugged the land-line :P P.O.E.T.S day, so I’m home now.

  7. The only Amarr ship I can be bothered with is the Prophecy, because I like fitting it out with Autocannons rather than lasers.
