What We Played #93: Pixel People, Binary Domain, WWE ’12

What We Played

With Alex in the States for the PlayStation 4 event it’s tempting to suggest he’s enjoying playing games with the other TSA. But as their games involve the uncomfortable combination of real guns and latex gloves, that’s something best left well alone. Which is probably what Alex is hoping…

Back here in the UK, where you’re less likely to find yourself fulfilling the role of an impromptu finger puppet (although as Sucker Punch pointed out, you are surrounded by 4.2 million CCTV cameras. Smile!) all the PS4 excitement has led to a degree of PS3 neglect and we haven’t played much.

Random thought warning: I wonder if Space: Marine would be a good title for game about exploring the great voids beneath our oceans’ surface? Maybe I’m just too tired and when I think about gaming, which for me is all Mass Effect 3 and Aliens: Colonial Marines still, those two words are just branded on the left side of my brain.

Peter’s latest gaming experience is “an awful lot” of Pixel People on iOS (If he was alternatively playing on Io’s surface, space marines could be involved!). He says that Pixel People is “one of those town management things a bit like The Simpsons one”, although as I’m not familiar with that one either it doesn’t really help.

Fortunately he goes on to explain:

You get clones [like storm troopers, AKA space marines?]  delivered to your splicing centre and you have to splice two sets of genes together, from different professions, to create a clone with a new profession.

Then the game gives you a new building when you have a clone that needs a specialist place to work and those buildings earn you coins to level up and buy new houses, landscaping, etc. for more clones and a more productive city.

There’s not a lot of point to it but you can get very far without spending real money on any in-app nonsense and it’s something to do while I try not to think about my life trickling ever onwards towards my inevitable demise, right?

Riiiight, and on that happy note (not that talk of Peter’s demise is happy you understand, it’s just a turn of phrase, though Kris might start eyeing up TSA’s corporate ladder) it’s over to Aran who played Urban Trial Freestyle for our review and summarises by calling it “a decent game” with a “ridiculous amount of leader boards [that] means there will always be a challenge to beat”.

[drop2]He’s also played through Binary Domain (which is kind of space marine-y without ever leaving Earth). While he only found the story “okay” he says the “action was brilliant”, “the boss fights were entertaining” and overall he “really enjoyed the game”. He finished by saying that while it’s not without the odd niggle, it’s well worth a dip in the bargain bin for.

Tuffcub is still playing through NfS: Most Wanted on his PS Vita which this week gets the vaunted rating of “the most fun you can have on the London Underground without taking your clothes off”. Prototype 2 has also got a look in because he gets “to stick [his] appendage in soldiers”. There’s a theme there and it’s not space marines.

Last up this week is Kris who’s been playing a game filled with over-muscled men and women in daft costumes. No, not another space marine title, but WWE ’12.  “It’s really, really bad in terms of gameplay”, he begins, before trying to salvage something for the game by saying that “some of the storylines in story mode are as good, if not better, than what’s on TV”.

I really, really hope he’s talking about WWE-based TV as otherwise someone needs to sit him down in front of shows like Ripper Street, Utopia and Dark Mirror and drag him away from I’m a Celebrity…

So as we probe further into the PS3’s last year as Sony’s flagship console, what have you been playing?

  1. Sleeping dogs trying to platinum the game, but the bike controls are awful, so the bike raves are painful.

A bit of Ni No Kuni, this game ONG, can’t wait for weview & I ain’t got good things to say lol. On the vita a bit of rocket birds, sly cooper demo, brilliant demo.

  2. Let’s see:
Completed the Chaos Rising expansion pack for Dawn of War 2 on Primarch difficulty, played through Journey once more, did a little bit of Chime: Super Deluxe (unfortunately I’ve been knocked down to 13th in the leaderboards when I was 3rd, but I’ve not played properly in a while), been played Medieval 2: Total War Kingdoms expansion as the Welsh on Very Hard/Very Hard difficulty and enjoying the PS4 reveal. Overall it’s been a pretty good week of gaming for me.

Not sure what games I’ll be getting over the next few months but Ni No Kuni is definitely a purchase at some point.

  3. Wait, what? WWE has stories? I thought it was just men in leotards hugging each other?

    • Perhaps in one story one guy raids the other guys’ wardrobe for his favourite leotard, and then gets a lipstick mark on it, which instigates a violent brawl, with chairs!

      • This must be it. The world makes sense again.

    • Yep, much like all gamers are nerdy teenage boys ;)

  4. Besides reinstalling everything on my PC which takes a lot of time (patching, updating and back-up) and setting up a TOR-node anonymous server. While doing the above I played a few Dirt Showdown online matching with the usual TSA-members, I grinded through a couple of online matches in DOA5.

Most fun so far this week, has been the MW2 TSA-meet that Youles kindly had organised. It was a lot of fun and I was amazed by the fact that I still knew my way around on the maps. Dispite my low K/D ratio I could be of help for the rest of the members in the team by clearing the skies for them. We did some private and public matches. My personal favourite was the Free for all on Dust with just us TSA that had signed up for this meet. Spikey Mikey going baserk with his RPG, nice ! Crysis 3 had its release this week and I will be playing it on my pc. I am looking forward to that.

    • You anti-aircraft skills were both useful and impressive. I look forward to the next meet ;)

gazzagb was pretty handy with those akimbo-MP5s on Rust too.

  5. More of Ni No Kuni (and that’s not likely to change anytime soon!) and a drive down memory lane on Wednesday. I got the amazing N64 wrestling game WCW vs. NWO Revenge and played that for hours with my friend. This game still puts every other wrestling game to shame when it comes to fun! :D

  6. Finished my playthrough of Colonial Marines – quite enjoyed it at first ended up hating it towards the end. Generic gameplay, cruddy voice acting, naff textures and ultimately just a flat experience. Multiplayer was good mind.

Other than that I made a start on NFS:MW(2012) which seems alright so far. Sort of like Burnout Paradise 1.5, if Burnout had occasionally choppy frame rates. Achievements seem to be popping like they’re going out of fashion.

Picked up a cheap copy of SSX in the Blockbuster sale. Oh ma goodness I love this game. Was a little hesistant going in as it seemed a bit more serious that the older games but I’m having a blast with it. Great controls, awesome presentation and just so much content to keep me busy. Hoping this game will keep me occupied until my copy of Tomb Raider arrives.

  7. So much DiRT Showdown I’ve almost made myself sick. That said, I should complete the level 30 grind by Monday evening (latest), then the rest is fairly straight forward for the platinum!

Played some Blops2 which was just boring after 30 minutes, although I may take advantage of the double XP weekend this weekend and work up to level 55 at least.

Had the MW2 meet, which was rather successful and enjoyable despite being a bit drunk. Damn Mikey and his tubing/RPGs. Private games 3 vs 3 Search & Destroy were great fun!

Also played quite a bit of Hitman which is very impressive, and I love it – although trying to do everything perfectly is rather tedious since you often have to “Restart from Checkpoint”, and progression can be a long-winded case of trial-and-error.

I also tried the MG Revengeance demo….and hated it. The slashing mechanics work rather well, it’s just a bit button-bashy for me and I’d get bored rather quickly!

    • How could I have forgotten….I also started my first playthrough of Dead Space 3 with MadJunkBoy which he’s recording – I hate hearing my own voice, lol. I am really enjoying it so far. I do think it’s a little fast-paced for a DS game (so far), what with the grappling section early on, and the number of necromorphs you face. I do really like the weapon creation system, and the environments, sounds and visuals are all nicely detailed, as I’d expect from a Dead Space game.

      • Do you think in DS3 that Issac has now graduated from engineer to space marine? With more space marines in it Dead Space will have finally finished its transition from Alien to Aliens and the franchise can be quietly dropped before they try to do Dead Space: Prison World. :-)

      • Haha, yeah it does seem to have gone that way. I’m only on chapter 4 since MJB wants to record in small(ish) sections, but what worries me most is that the main threat now could turn out to be nasty human “badies” (from the few cut-scene moments we’ve had), whereas for me it should all be about the necromorphs. I don’t mind shooting the humans, it’s actually nice that they’ve been integrated as enemies, I’d just rather not have some group of humans behind the necromorphs spreading etc. This is just speculation of course, as I’m not far in, but it concerns me, and that the story could be rather cliche and cheesey.

  8. Just a little bit of PSASBR which I’m so close to platinum! I’ve also gone back to Skyrim which I haven’t played for ages!

  9. finished off Dead Space 1. And started the game again to mop up a few trophies. Also just been playing the usual few races on F1. Had 16 DNF’s in one crash at Monte Carlo which was all staged by the AI drivers!

  10. More Skyrim … 100% trophies for both Dragonborn and Hearthfire. I’ve also been playing a bit of F1 Race Stars again and Urban Trial Freestyle.
