A big thank you to Kris for holding the fort for a few weeks. He’s relieved to find that I’m back on the Thursday night late shift again this week, here to let you know what’s kept our thumbs twitching this week as What We Played enters its third year.
Freed of the need to tell you what everyone else has been playing, Kris has played through Injustice: Gods Among Us campaign. And how was it? “Franky, it’s disappointing.” His expectations were set high by the Mortal Kombat reboot and, consequentially, he felt it was a real let down.
To be fair this does still put its story above every other fighting game bar Mortal Kombat (as in it actually has a story) but trying in such a half hearted way almost feels worse than not trying at all.
TSA’s teddy bear mascot Tuffcub has achieved something this week I’ve not yet found the stamina for. He’s finished The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and says he “loved the ending”. With the Nords and dragons out of the way, he played a “bit of Sine Mora Vita” and, it’ll come as no surprise to regular readers, Killzone 3.
It seems that XCOM: Enemy Unknown decided that Aran needed taking down a peg or two:
I had sent my best squad out to check out an abduction site, a fairly standard mission in itself. Initially it started well but the further in the team went the crazier it got. At least 5 different types of enemies appeared, far stronger than anything my squad had faced before.
They fought valiantly but the alien attack was aggressive. No one in that squad got out alive. My best Sniper, Heavy, Assault and Support all wiped out. I was in shock.
Next time out of the gate he had only a veteran and a handful of rookies. Two of the rookies made it back alive, which leaves the fate of Earth in the hands of a few soldiers who are about as likely to win the fight as the extras in Battlefield Earth were to get an Oscar.
To psyche himself up before sending his few remaining troops to their inevitable deaths he turned to Rayman Origins and has “really enjoyed” what he’s played so far. He described it as “a visually stunning, enjoyable 2D platformer” that reminds him of the simple joys of the early Rayman games.
Still in the midst of his exams, DanToo is taking solace in the fact that he only has one left. The need to revise hasn’t stopped him taking to the online track in F1 2012 though. “I’m actually getting pretty good at the game but am still regularly frustrated by the other moronic (can I say that? Ha) drivers you find online.” I’m assuming he hasn’t been playing online with the TSA F1 crowd… or maybe he has.
And because it’s never enough to let just one game get in the way of your revision:
On the PC side of things I’m getting stuck into BioShock (the first one), even though I already know what happens. After playing a little bit though I’ve come to a sudden revelation linking it to Infinite. If it’s all connected Irrational Games are bloody brilliant people!
He doesn’t reveal what his revelation was so we can neither commend his mental leap nor point at, laugh and mock him. Probably a wise move on his part.
That’s not all for DanToo though, I mean why put your books down for just two games when you can play three? After playing some more Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon he says it’s “basically just Far Cry 3 but feels like you’re playing it after finished a bottle of vodka”.
Last but not least this week we have the next exciting chapter in the saga of Dom’s house move. “I now have a house!” I didn’t say it would be a long chapter and admittedly “exciting” might have been over-selling it just a little bit.
With most things still in boxes and no TV set up for gaming he’s clearly got his priorities wrong somewhere. But with a 3DS and the recently reviewed Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Gates To Infinity he does at least have something to play, despite finding it “dull”. Join us again next week as we up the excitement when Dom unpacks a box!
Meanwhile, what have you all been playing?

Tuffcub
*spits coffee all over screen* Teddy bear mascot?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Indeed, i feel ‘resident filth monger’ is much more appropriate! ;)

Finally got round to firing up the FUSE demo this week with a buddy. The EA logo sent me in with low expectations but I have to admit I really enjoyed it. Sure, the visuals aren’t great, but the game has plenty of fun weapons to experiment with, and switching between characters on-the-fly is a nice touch. Given it doesn’t feature an online pass I will either rent it or pick it up in a bargain bin in a couple of months.
The RE Revelations HD demo was also taken for a test drive and I was pleased to see Capcom have done a great job at porting this solid game over from the 3DS. Playing on Infernal difficulty was great fun, forcing you to avoid enemies and conserve your ammo. Just 7 days to go until the full release. Cannot wait! :D
Other than that, I made a start on an Insane play through of Gears1 (always fun in co-op) and played a few rounds here and there of MW3 (always fun when my internet speeds are half-decent…).
Taylor Made
Platinum FIFA vita, hard work that was! Now I’m just on soul sacrifice, I love the online
Youles
I think you may have the Fastest Platinum for FIFA13…..check the forum! On Vita that is, I have the PS3 fastest :p
Taylor Made
Yay that’s 2 games I hold now for fastest longest game that’s been out for ages lol
Youles
Haha, well done mate ;)
matthangzhou
Congrats buddy
KeRaSh
I only played Zelda: Phantom Hourglass this week. Hopefully I can finish it before Remember Me arrives.
Youles
Welcome back Greg!
I’ve not played much really – on Vita just working through my Manager Career on FIFA13 with Dortmund. I tried the Farming Simulator demo – it was surprisingly calming but I think it’s a game that would require more time than I can give. I’ve downloaded that Jacob Bigfoot thing, and Velocity Ultra, but haven’t tried either yet.
On PS3 I’m in the latter stages of my BioShock Infinite 1999 Mode stages. I’ve got to the (POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING) ghost battles, and they are tough! I’m using Charge Aid (which recharges your shield) and some gear that assists with melee attacks – one of which give x3 range which is useful with Charge Aid. Any other tips would be handy?
Other than that I played the Fuse demo which I thought was pretty average, and I intend to try the new Resident Evil demo over the weekend.
Youles
*playthrough not stages! Fail.
Forrest_01
The ‘ghosts’ that are ‘awakened’ by the alarm character? I found a good way of dealing with them was to ensure they were all chasing me, then bucking bronco them (so that you capture all/most) & then follow up with the Devils Kiss.
Don’t know how practical that is on 1999 of course, but it worked well on hard.
Of course if you are referring to the ghostly ‘lady’, all i can do is wish you good luck, as that was hard. There is however some cover you can utilise in a room adjacent to the tomb.
Youles
Thanks. I was refereing to the “lady” though sadly :(
The trouble I had was that as soon as there are a few enemies resurrected, my health is gone in seconds (on 1999 mode)! I think I shall use that spot you mention with all the medikits, and hope that she comes within range and hit her with some Charge Aid…and use Bronco on the smaller enemies.
Forrest_01
Ah, yes – Very hard fight.
My tactic (eventually) was to get into that room behind cover & wait for a couple of ghosts to appear in the doorway – A couple of well placed headshots & she should appear somewhere close to resurrect them & should hopefully be in your vision, allowing you to get some cheap hits in whilst she is busy. Rinse & repeat, but you will need to venture out to get more weapons/ammo at some point, as she takes a LOT of damage.
The challenge is not to waste all your ammo on the weaker enemies, which i failed at miserably the first couple of times! :/
Youles
Cheers mate, that’s the plan. I can actually take half her health down within the first 10 seconds using Charge Aid, so I might be ok using that plan thereafter – it’s just Salts that could be a problem :/
f4rgo
She was a total biatch on hard but after some advice from the internets, on 1999 mode I went with – Burning Halo, Executioner, Overkill, Brittle-Skinned & Charge. Initially I spent time hiding in the adjacent crypt and sniping from cover but even with Murder of crows traps I ended up out of ammo. So after losing a wad of cash on respawns I adopted the patented Leroy Jenkins approach and got to know her up close and personal and it was over in less than 20 seconds (did I just double entendre myself?!).
Youles
Thanks for the advice. I’m okay for the first 10 seconds, then she often escapes to the balcony, then before I know it there are like 15 other enemies and it becomes very awkward!
Haha, I love that video…..”Godamnit Leroy”
matthangzhou
I upgraded charge aid.
Added the melee boosting gear, the one which sets her on fire and brittle skin I think it was called. Charged in meleed her face and she was dead in like 10 seconds. Surprisingly easy.
Youles
Ahh, I haven’t actually punched her in the face after Charging her…perhaps I should! I also didn’t think the fire would work on her, so I’ll use that piece of Gear too – cheers!
I had no trouble on Hard, and to be fair I’ve done some damage in 1999 Mode, I just want to avoid several deaths and save the dosh! ;)
Forrest_01
Yeah, i was also gonna mention that she seemed to be susceptible to fire (Devils Kiss) when i fought her.
Have to say though that the thought of melee’ing her didn’t even occur to me – So we are saying a good plan of attack when i go for 1999 mode is to use the charge plas…erm vigour & then follow up with a melee strike?
Also, is that charge with the upgrade that does explosive damage?
f4rgo
Yep, melee all the way for her on 1999 if you’re sufficiently equipped. Didn’t fire a single shot on any of her encounters in the end, much easier than plugging away ineffectually with ranged weapons.
Broonba
**POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING**
In the graveyard section, I camped out in the crypt that’s on your right, round corner (facing out from coffin crypt). The one that’s got health packs & spammed my Devils Kiss & weapons every time she appeared outside. Sometimes an enemy came inside to get me but not if Elizabeth is crouching near your position. I did have to make a mad dash for more ammo (under wee bridge with health) & back before I beat the bitch. (Shotgun & grenade launcher thingy is handy for this battle)
On bank battle, when it starts, go outside of vault for a few secs & try to get most of the enemies to follow you back into vault. If you succeed in luring them into vault, kill them as far inside of it that you dare. If you do it properly the bitch doesn’t come close enough to resurrect them. During fight, don’t linger too much outside as she can get you with her powerful area attack. (Sniper rifle is handy for this battle)
Last battle. I camped out in corner with the 3 machines & spammed my sniper rifle every time I had a clear shot. You can mostly stay unharmed from here.
Lots of luck man as she really is a total bitch to fight.

What have i done this week? Well apart from arranging interviews, i have mainly been eating cheese… Umm, i mean involved in the usual meets. Actually, that’s a lie – This week has been a bit more ‘freeform’.
So aside from the usual Dirt Showdown meet (sans motalla) on Tuesday, i have managed to get through the bulk of Sly 3, platinumed UDraw Instant Artist (after fears that one of the trophies might have glitched on me), finished my first playthrough of Infinite, bar missing an upgrade & some kinetiscopes &/or telescopes (fantastic game & as Dan mentioned, some things do link together really quite nicely), had a great first co-op session of Riptide last night with R1M & OnlineAssWardy (again, as motalla was sunning it up in hotter climes) & started Tekken Tag 2 last night.
I wasn’t going to bother with TTT2 (after the realisation that i rarely play one on one beat em ups these days), but at a tenner, i just couldn’t turn it down! I also picked up Goldeneye Reloaded for the princely sum of £6 (which also seems to come with a bit of DLC & a mini strategy guide!), so might give that a run through in a few days time.
& of course to round off the week, we have a bit of BFBC1 this evening, which is sure to come with its share of frustrations such as spawncamping & members of your own team trying to boost & contributing nothing to the fight. Its a shame really, as when its good, its excellent, but when its bad its REALLY bad.
Might be doing a bit of Mercenaries 2 with Del on the weekend & some Burnout might feature too, but i am now trying to decide which game i want to concentrate on for my 75th platinum.
Choices choices! ;)
Wardy-77-
OnlineAssWardy dosn’t sound quite right, makes it sound like im a bit of an ass online lol. Yeah enjoyed it last night with Riptide made a change and wary of bein stabbed in the back several times later on the Battlefield :D
Forrest_01
Yeah, i just don’t know what to call you these days!! ;)
I reckon your next name should probably be wOArdy.
gaffers101
I think I’m pretty much near the end of Bioshock Infinite now. I was really enjoying it at the start, now I’m just trying to get to the end.
I’ve also been playing Thomas was alone on my Vita. I must say it’s much nicer to play on the Vita than the PS3, it just feels right?!
Oh and Lego LOTR is now finished, just wrapping up the last few trophies.
The Lone Steven
Picked up Dragon’s Dogma:DA 2 weeks ago and have been playing that since. It’s excellent. Okay, the plot is cliched due to you being the chosen one(Arisen as it’s called in the game) but i’m enjoying it. Combat is excellent. I love climbing into a cyclops and unleashing hundred winds onto it. The game knows how to do battles. The other day, i fought a golem for the first time which turned into a 3 way fight. Me vs golem vs the bandits. Unsure if they were fighting it as well though. Chimeras are disappointing as i can kill them in a minute or two at this point in the game. Tried Dark Arisen, retreated after discovering it was too hard at the level i was and will attempt it soon.
Forrest_01
“I love climbing into a cyclops and unleashing hundred winds onto it.”
Dirty boy! ;)
The Lone Steven
It always kills them. ;)
matthangzhou
Been tempted by this on the store for ages. Thought it might be on plus soon but now I dont think so. Capcom don’t like plus it seems.
Forrest_01
I recall Dead Rising 2 being given away on plus, but other than that i would actually be struggling to think of what other Capcom games have been available.
Origami Killer
I’ve gone and bought Demons Souls (again) and Velocity Ultra since this, three games was obviously not enough.
Demons Souls servers are still on too, which I thought they were off.
f4rgo
Don’t ask me why but I continued to torment myself until getting the F1 Race Stars platinum. That’s after rage deleting it twice. Thanks PS+ … NOT.
Forrest_01
Hope you don’t mind me asking, but why ‘torment’?
I felt it was actually a decent little game for what it was & didn’t find a lot of the trophies too challenging – There was the odd issue with the leaderboard for time trials not updating on random occasions, but other than that, i felt it was a pretty straightfoward, fun game.
f4rgo
Granted, it wasn’t all bad but I just found some of the usual kart fun missing. The trophies themselves were fairly reasonable and I never had any glitching or leaderboard issues so I guess I’m lucky in that respect. I think having just come from Sonic and all Stars (which I much preferred) I was expecting more of the same. But it’s the only game I’ve deleted multiple times and then re-downloaded, I guess it must have a quality not immediately obvious to me.
Forrest_01
I agree its a bit of a strange one as its a karting game that wants to be an F1 game, ergo no drifting & stuff which you would usually expect to find in a karting game.
It took a while to get into it for me, but once i knew what the limitations were & got used to the courses, i got quite a lot of enjoyment out of it.
