Sony Details PlayStation Plus On PlayStation 4

Automatic game updates will no longer be a part of the subscription.

Sony has detailed the changes PlayStation Plus will see on the PlayStation 4 , with the inclusion of online gaming into the Plus subscription just the start. Thankfully, pretty much everything else is a positive, although the company hasn’t decided on Gaikai.

“It is time to charge,” said Sony Europe MD Fergal Gara [via], “but it is time to charge and still continue to deliver phenomenal value.”

“A PlayStation Plus subscriber for PlayStation 4 comes away with a hell of a lot,” he said. “First of all, the subscription applies across all three platforms, so if you have the three platforms then you have an instant game collection on all three.”

If you don't have Plus, perhaps now's the time - the PS4 will be heavily weighted towards subscribers.
“But it is true to say that the online multiplayer element for PS4, you do require the subscription,” Gara added.

“If you choose not to subscribe we are still gating relatively little in many senses,” he added, “so access to online catch-up TV and online movie services sit outside of the gate, for example.”

“The social features of PS4 and PS4 games and things like auto-updates on PS4 sit outside of PlayStation Plus, so we’re trying to be as balanced and as fair as we possibly can.” Auto-updates are a Plus benefit on PS3.

“If you choose to pay the subscription, yes, you get one important element of modern-day gameplay, but you also get fantastic value in games, including the PlayStation Plus Edition of DriveClub.”

Gara says that the inclusion of Gaikai into PlayStation Plus hasn’t been decided, though, and could still be behind the £40 a year subscription fee. “We haven’t decided,” he said, adding that the Remote Play feature (that’ll mean Vita consoles can play PS4 games) “uses some Gaikai technology.”

“Will that be part of PlayStation Plus? I genuinely don’t know. Will that require some other, different charging mechanism? Perhaps. We just haven’t sat down to answer that question yet.”

Sony will introduce Gaikai’s PS3 playback in 2014 in the US.

I don’t think they mean remote play wont work till 2014, i think he was simply saying that “some Gaikai tech is already in use on the PS4 at no extra cost”

Not sure I get the ‘oh dear’

Plus is ridiculous value as it is, publishers could lose out by Sony’s stance on Vita Remote Play (not that they’re making big budget titles for it anyway) so will no doubt want some form of revenue share… & looking at what’s included in + I presume there’s no spare revenue in there, so rather than put the price up for everyone, introducing a long-rumoured second tier makes sense

I bought a PS3 that promised the feature, bought a vita on launch day and pre ordered a PS4, oh and got a few years of Plus added on, now they want more money for a feature that’s free on PS3 (some games) and WiiU

At the ps4 reveal they said gaikai tech is built in so maybe it’s just for remote play and the streaming older games will cost money.

Because this isn’t the PS3 anymore. This is the PS4. What was promised on PS3 won’t neccessarily carry on over to PS4, as we’ve seen with the introduction of online mutlplayer behind a paywall.

They said Remote Play was a necessity for all games except those that rely on the PS Eye, so that means games that lack this functionality will be rejected by QA before the game releases, right? That would suggest that it will be available at launch no matter when Gaikai officially launches on the PS4. They said that some stripped down Gaikai tech is built into the PS4 so it’s local streaming, which should not be affected by payments for the actual cloud based Gaikai.
I’ll get PS+ when the PS4 launches but I hope I don’t have to upgrade to a higher tier for local Remote Play…

Seems fair so far. Although I already have Plus so it’s no issue for me.

This gives me the impression that remote play to the Vita will linked to Gaikai, which in itself is no major problem, but I was hoping to use this prior to the 2014 (and probably 2015 in the UK).

I hope they are able to make this work much sooner…..my Vita needs some PS4 love….was planning on making Vita babies!!

On a side note…PLEASE Sony bring out some 64GB Vita cards!!

I think remote play will be available from launch. It’s system based, it may use some of the technology but I believe that is the way the PS4 communicated with the Vita, not the Vita running off a Sony server.

To do that online rather than over wi-fi might be plus feature.

Hope so….but hey I have patience and can wait….the bigger and cheaper cards are more important to me at this time….need to store more games lol

Remote Play via Gaikai might be the way their doing it in fully remote play, i.e. over the internet, outside your network.

I presume this means that auto updates will therefore happen as a matter of course on PS4 with no need for PS+ – makes sense for things like Planetside 2 – as long as they don’t have multi GB updates for DCUO it’s not a bad idea

*they’re doing it in fully remote play* (Corrects own grammar)

Yup PS4 title updates will happen automatically for everyone.

Goes back to Sony’s promise during Feb reveal of more time gaming & less time downloading & updating. Let’s be honest the PS3 was a mess here, so glad it’s sorted.

PS3 wasn’t a mess at all. My PS3 udates and installs overnight. Never seen a update prompt since the moment I subscribed to PS+

I really don’t know what your pointis.

He probably means it’s a mess unless you are a plus member, which won’t be a problem on the PS4 because it’s not behind a paywall anymore.

Sounds pretty fair. BTW, how do you pronounce Gaikai? Is it guy-k-eye or gay-kay or something else?

On Dictionary.com, the word “guy” is written as ‘gahy’ for pronunciation. With that in mind, I believe it’s ‘gahy-kahy’ so it rhymes.

I believe the official response from MS to this point would be “Well, we have a product for that, it’s called XBOX 360″.

So, just to clarify, does that mean you can connect to psn/store, sync trophies, get auto-updates and use the social features for free – or do you have to pay another fee for those features?

Does “Outside of plus” mean A) Auto updates happen on all PS4s free of charge or B) We have to pay another fee for them?

      In that instance – A

Sony do seem to be going for the ‘fair deals’, but I do hope that the XBone can do OK too so that the competition keeps Sony focussed on this path…..

Let’s be honest Remote Play will work on Vita only if you have a crazy internet so I do not think that it will be detrimental for developers of Vita games. Just make Vita games that is it.
I do not think we should pay extra for Remote Play because the WiiU already has some form of it and it comes with the console itself. Charge us 50£ then for PS+ but give us the whole package. Just don’t 2-3 packages and PS+ Premium and such. Just PS+.

The vita connects straight to the PS3 doesnt it if you’re close to it? I thought it became a server itself, guessing this is the same as PS4, so you don’t need really good internet.

I don’t think they suggested remote play might be part of Plus. I think you’re misreading there.
