PlayStation Store Update: 19/02/14 – Strider, EDF 2025 & Freedom Cry

Do you remember the Strider games? They’re something I missed out on, whether it’s the original arcade game or some of the following sequels and ports. But Strider’s back this week, bringing some ninja-based action to PS3 and PS4 for £11.99/€14.99. The PS3 has a trial, but unfortunately this is not a Cross-Buy title.

The same is true of Assassin’s Creed: Freedom Cry, the DLC turned standalone game which will feature Adewale in a distinct 3 hour adventure. It’s out now on PS3 and PS4 for £11.99/€14.99.

Rayman Legends pops up on PS4 for the slightly pricey £34.99/€39.99, given how close it is in quality to the PS3 release, available tomorrow.

Rounding things out for the PS4 is the download for the Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn PS4 beta. Get your console ready now for when the beta kicks off on Saturday.

As always, retail games are added on Fridays, which is when the PS3 will see the release of Earth Defense Force 2025, translating last year’s Japanese release for Western markets and following on from EDF 2017 with more giant insects and great big robots. This will set you back £34.99/€44.99 and, though I’m sure some of you will be hoping for a PS Vita release as we saw with EDF 2017, this is just for the PS3 a moment.

Also seeing a European release on Friday is Ys: Memories of Celceta, with the well received Action RPG coming to the PS Vita.

Update: Ys’ release is retail only this week, with a PSN release next week.

Sorcery Saga: Curse of the Great Curry God wins this week’s award for the strangest game title, out today on Vita for £29.99, while the tongue twisting title Fort Defence North Menace is £3.99/€4.99. Gunslugs brings rogue-like sidescrolling to the handheld for £1.99 or £1.59 for PS+ subscribers.

As an aside, if you’re looking for the maps being added to Killzone: Mercenary, bringing a taste of Killzone 2 to the handheld, these are actually being delivered via the 1.06 patch. No need to traipse to the store at all!

There’s a rather unique PS Mobile game already out this week, in the form of Battle of Puppets. It’s an opera-themed tactical puppet battler, which is certainly a bit different, and it’s available for £2.19/€2.79 via the PS Mobile section on your Vita or phone.

On the DLC front, Zen Pinball 2 is going Football crazy, with the new Super League Football table. It’s just one table with several themes, for Arsenal, Liverpool FC, Barcelona, Real Madrid C.F., A.C. Milan, Juventus Football Club, A.S. Roma and the more fictional Zen Studios F.C. though the table remains the same, each individual team will cost £2.39/€2.99. The Cross-Buy system here is a little odd, only working from PS3 and PSV to PS4, and not the other way around. You should read more on it here.

Finally, there’s the PS3 and PS4 release of the Second Assault DLC for Battlefield 4 Premium owners only, which rolled out yesterday. If you don’t have Premium, then it will be made available to everyone else in a fortnight.

As usual, I’ll be back later to add more details, prices and games that haven’t yet arrived on the store itself.

Update: Added Rayman Legends, corrected Ys’ entry and filled in with prices for mainland Europeans.

  1. Ys is out this week?

Excellent. Vita is turning into a real RPG machine.

    • Digital release isn’t until next week according to NIS America. They said next Tuesday/Wednesday for a PSN release. Retail release is still this Friday though.

      • Ah, this is indeed the case. No Ys on the store this week.

  2. Hoping Rayman is decently priced on PS4.

    • Saw the Wii U version for £19.99 in GAME, and that’s easily still the best version.

  3. Picking up Strider, i hear that its not all that bad but then I’ve only read up Destructoid’s review so far.

  4. FF14 beta for me. Am yet to play an MMO so I’m tempted to check out either FF14 or TESO this year.

  5. I don’t really have time for the whole of AC4 so the stand-alone DLC will be nice, and a good opportunity to see Assassins Creed on PS4 in the flesh!

    • Freedom cry is very different to the main game. Although it was decent enough, it lost alot of its charm, the free roaming/upgrades/rpg kind of feel is lost in this. Its also buggy as hell (or was as DLC) its enjoyable but no where near as good as the mIn game (which turned out to be one of mu favourite games).

      • Thanks for the heads up, at least it means if I don’t enjoy it that’s not necessarily a representation of the full game. Not surprised about bugs – Liberation on Vita was FULL of them!!

  6. If I buy premium for battlefield 4 do I get the content from when it was out I.e. The gold battle packs, knives, camo and all the other stuff that’s on the calendar or just from now

  7. Anyone played Gunslugs yet? It looks like it could be really good fun, or it could be terrible. I am tempted at that price.

  8. “Sorcery Saga: Curse of the Great Curry God”. How I wish there was a demo for this…

  9. I will download the XIV beta and I will maybe buy Freedom Cry. Great for me that they are selling DLC independently on the original game, as I usually trade games as soon as I complete them.

  10. Curiously there’s a random DLC item for KZ: Mercs in the form of a heavy machine gun (the ISA model I think) for £1.19. Seems like a random thing to chuck out there. I hope they bring some weapon packs and even more maps to the game. More curiously, I’m tempted to buy this new gun DLC, even though it’s rather illogical and quite extortionate at £1.19.

    • I believe this will be a one-off, as it is most likely the LMG that was originally only available as a pre-order bonus. You never know though!
