OnLive Set To Launch

In amongst all the big news such as Sony’s new motion controller being announced and the megaton of Gamesmaster returning to TV, the announcement from poor old OnLive regarding their launch was left out.

Announced during GDC 2010 was the news that OnLive will launch in June for $14.95 a month. The service which will be available on both PC and Mac will include support from publishers including Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, 2K Games, THQ and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.

Launch titles will include the likes of Mass Effect 2, Borderlands, Assassin’s Creed II and more, with the services providers hoping that they will have at least 25 titles on offer to begin with.

The OnLive service works by compression. The service basically squeezes game data into a compact form to be  transferred over a broadband connection to the OnLive server, where the data is computed. The video is then sent back over the broadband line to the user’s computer with such speed that the user should hopefully not know any better.

OnLive can be accessed by players using their PC or if they prefer, by purchasing a Micro Console TV Adapter from OnLive, which converts the images so they can be displayed on a TV set.
