Needless opponents of Sony’s regular, incremental system software updates should look away now – there’s another awaiting your PS3’s next boot. 3.41 went live overnight, its main draw the ability for the PlayStation Store to sell you more stuff via an Amazon-like “you may also like” section next to each item on the Store.
Or, at least there will be when the new recommendations box goes live, firmware 3.41 is just to prep for the new feature which is slated for the “end of July”.
“This feature is a great way to discover new games that you may not know about,” said Sony’s Eric Lempel, “and it’s another step toward making the shopping experience easier and better for you all – similar to the five-star ratings feature we added in the last firmware update.”
Sony promise that the recommends are based on what people are actually buying, rather than any inferred relationship between the goods, like the way Apple do with their ‘Genius’ method. The latter idea makes more sense to me, something that would push Gravity Crash when you’re looking at PixelJunk Shooter, for example (and Vice Versa, of course) but we’re not fussy. Well, we are a little bit.

you have to agree though thats the ps store is actually very good, its nicley laid out and easy to use. my friends who have 360 prefer the ps store to the 360 marketplace.

Couldn’t agree more. The I’ve seen more organisation from a marketplace in war torn Afghanistan than on the Xbox. Literally.

Well, there is no latest option in the Dutch PS store either, we do have an “In the spotlight” section, but not all games are featured there.
I had to search for a game the other day which I knew had to be on the store, but was not in the ” In the Spotlight” section… Took me a while to find the game :s
I really miss a latest (or new addition) part in the PS Store….

The US PS store is even better than the EU one. XBLM used to be really easy to use till the update which ruined it.

What else is in the update as this seems unbelievably strange to release an update with potentially one feature and that feature has very little importance to say the last. It should’ve been with 3.40 or wait for 3.42. Oh well.

With minor updates like this I always wonder if they’ve fixed an exploit, something live a Java based one or a buffer overflow, and they attach a minor feature to make it palatable.
Back in the day they used to come out with the generic ‘increased stability for some titles’

I’m all for new firmware and improvements, but when it’s stuff like this, why not just wait until the next x.x0 update?

Because despite all out whining, we’ll still go and check it out, perhaps even buy something – and money talks. Think of it this way, even if this update might temporarily annoy 50% of their user base, if only 1% of that user base buys something from the store worth $5 that they otherwise wouldn’t have, that’s ~$1.75 million dollars extra in Sony’s pocket.
Also, I imagine the ‘feature’ will stick in your mind more now that it has been given so much attention. Even if you only remember it because it annoyed you, you’ll still remember it and may use it in future… again, more chance for a sale.

And still things sit on PlayStation.Share, not getting any attention instead of this on the store, they could of got rid of the many additional store icons, not saying the big things… *ctrl+v* CROSS GAME CHAT?, but like for like.
Plus why don’t they allow patches to the firmware for 0.0X updates, so you download what 5MB max for the patch and then when you get a 0.X0 or a X.00 update you do the full 150MB?
