Modern Warfare 2 Becomes Best Selling Game In The UK

Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has today become the biggest selling UK videogame ever, passing the DS’ Brain Training game in the official Chart Track figures. “This is the week that Activision Blizzard’s [game] finally overtakes Nintendo’s DS ‘Dr Kawashima’ as the biggest selling UK title ever (units),” says Chart Track, citing just 41 weeks since the game’s release. Modern Warfare 2 was outside the top 10 for just 3 weeks of the last 10 months.

It took Brain Training around 36 months to overtake the previous record holder, Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas last generation.  There’s probably a joke in there somewhere about casual games, but last time I checked Modern Warfare 2 was played by just about everybody, chances are your granny is partial to a bit of deathmatch in between shouting ‘Blue!, Blue!’ at the top of her voice in as many accents as she can manage.

Remember that Brain Training is only on one platform, whereas the first person shooter is on three.

  1. Tango Sucka!

  2. Congratulations is in order then whatever you think of the game.
Well done both Activision Blizzard and the (former) members of Infinity Ward who created the game.

    • I agree even though the game has issues.

  3. Its a brilliant game. Well deserved for Infinity Ward.

  4. I love the game and I am happy it made such an impact.
Congrats to all Infinity Ward current and “ex” employees

  5. crap game but fantastic advertising/promotion. They should be an ad agency instead.

    • haha. yea.

But the 1st game basically sold the 2nd, so it was going to do well

  6. Guess they’ll want to charge more for this years version then!!

    • Yup, even more pounds heading their way, so they can give us even more low-quality servers for the online stuff… And don’t get me started on the price of the DLC maps!

Talk about caring for the people who pay your wages. No wonder people buy second-hand!

  7. Congrats to what is an amazing value for money game. £26 on day 1 hopefully had something to do with this and hopefully others will take note.

  8. Well it’s less embarrassing than having Brain Training as the number 1 I suppose. I still don’t understand why it became such a monster hit though, what is it that makes people continue to buy it over other arguably better (and cheaper) titles?

    • like COD4 :p

    • People underestimate the casual gaming market. I’m not a DS player, but even if MW2 have overtaken them it’s not as impressive as Brain Training being #1. As the article says, MW2 is on three-times as many consoles as Brain Training.

  9. Even more than Jet Set Willy ?

  10. Does anyone know how many copies it has sold? I can’t find the article on chart track

    • from edge website

“While no specific sales figures were released for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC shooter, Chart-Track said that it took DS exclusive Dr Kawashima around 36 months to overtake the previous record holder, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, which was released for PS2, Xbox and PC.”

      • So basically for a single format title Dr Kawashima pwns all?
