PS3 Firmware 3.50 Coming Next Week

Josh already touched on this earlier this morning, but it’s worth further discussion: Sony last night announced yet another firmware update as part of their TGS press conference, this time taking the PS3’s system software to 3.50.

The update, which will land on the 21st of this month, will do little more than allow the PS3 to playback 3D Blu-ray discs for those of us lucky enough to have a suitable television set.  Sony had previously said the update will come in October, so this is a welcome shift.

I’m personally still hopefully that Sony will patch in some better XMB functionality for the Move, given that some operations, such as scrubbing through a film, don’t really work with the motion controller.

If we hear anything else on 3.50 today, we’ll let you know.

  1. Will it be optional? because I don’t want to waste even a few minutes on something like this.
You would think that an [x.x0] firmware would have some content?

  2. So I WAS right when I said this all those months ago.

  3. Hopefully they update PS3 Internet browser too…

    • i doubt it. they probably think the browser is not worth their time

      • I agree, considering how their own PS3-related websites barely function on it.

  4. So how long after the firmware is out do you think it will take for reports of peoples consoles being broken by it?

  5. Hope there’s more than that in the update. The internet browser desperately needs updating, and some new features would be nice.

  6. Good news.

    You’re “hopefully” ?

  7. I hope they improve the web browser and update the flash player. I just hope ;)

  8. I wish I had a 3DTV.. This FW is pointless without one!

I did try a 3DTV once, and felt disconfort in my eyes. Not sure if I could tolerate one!
