David O.Russell To Write & Direct Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune Film

It has been confirmed that David O.Russell is to write and direct the Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune movie.  The official press release read as follows:

“David O. Russell (Three Kings, The Fighter) has been set to write and direct Columbia Pictures’ Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, an action-adventure based upon the bestselling PlayStation 3 game, it was announced today by Doug Belgrad and Matt Tolmach, presidents of Columbia Pictures. The film will be produced by Avi Arad, Charles Roven, Ari Arad, and Alex Gartner.

The story follows the adventures of treasure hunter Nathan Drake.

Commenting on the announcement, Tolmach said, “David is a tremendous choice to take on this film. He’s equally adept at combining all the classic elements involved in this property: great character development, strong comedy, and amazing action sequences. He has a brilliant vision for this material and we know he will bring his original, unique voice to this adaptation.”

To add further spice to the proceedings, the legend that is Nathan Fillion has been most vocal on Twitter about how keen he is to take up the role of Nathan Drake and his infamous half tuck shirt:

“If ever there was a Twitter campaign, let this be it. Rise, ye Browncoats. Rise, ye Castillions. RISE!”

It seems fans are keen too, sending messages such as:

“Who must we frak to get you cast in the Drake’s Fortune movie????”

We think Fillion would make a fantastic Drake.  Who would you pick?

  1. Would rather see David Boreanaz, or Nolan North who voiced Drake looks like him and has done some acting previously.

  2. I actually think Joe Flanigan (Major/Lt Colonel John Sheppard, from Stargate Atlantis) would do a great Nathan Drake.

    • Second that.

    • Third that. Though Nathan Fillon is my joint second choice with Nolan North.

    • Forth that! The way he played Sheppard fits Drake perfectly…

  3. Depends on the movies budget, if it’s $120m+ then Fillion or North wouldn’t be a big enough draw for backers to invest, so Hugh Jackman or Jake Gyllenhaal would be a good shout.

If its a lower budget then it’s hard to imagine them doing the brand justice.

    • We for all his fandom, Fillion aint A list

      • exactly… the mention of his name heading up a blockbuster is hardly going to get the investors $millions out

      • thats only b/c he hasnt been given a chance. i dont care if he’s not A-list. Joss Whedon said that Fillion is the next Harrison Ford when given a shot. i cant think of anyone better to be Nathan drake in a live action movie. and that includes nolan north.

    • Just seen that Gyllenhaal is in O. Russell’s next film… so, you never know.

      • Starring in two video game to film adaptions? Hmmm I’m not sure. Specially since PoP will no doubt get a sequel.

How weird would that be though, Nolan North does the voices for the two franchises in the game (minus the new PoP) and Gyllenhaal is the actor cast in both films.

He is a great actor though and I could imagine him doing Drake justice. But as I said, he has just too much of a similar role in PoP.

      • You can’t have Gyllenhaal playing Nate as Nate’s head isn’t the size of Sputnik!

      • I hate to say it because I usually avoid nitpicking but did you know Sputnik was actually tiny? Saw a replica at the Euro space centre.

  4. Nathan Fillion is a top choice! Second choice would probably be Ryan Reynolds, he can do smart talk too, third choice would be to give the role to an unknown, Dylan Mcdermott has Nathan Drake look about him too…

  5. Ever seen the librarian films??? I think the guy that plays flyn carson would be a good choice for nathan drake….i think they call him noah wilde.

  6. I haven’t seen any films by this David Russell guy. Hope they’re good, it would be nice to see a good game/movie adaptation for a change. Last good one being the street fighter movie, lmao :D
Really don’t know who I would like to see cast in the main role as Drake. That’s a tough one…

    • His only Hollywood films are Threee Kings & I ♥ Huckabees

during Three Kings he fell out with everyone and even ended up in a massive fight with Clooney over his treatment of the crew, who has refused to ever work with him again.

      On that form it’s unlikely he’d be a given a $200m budget

      • The Fighter is already being tipped as a major oscar contender.
From what’s been shown of it so far, it looks really, really good.

      • Indeed he’s unlikely to be given a big budget, but James Cameron has had his share of big fall outs in the past and he keeps gettin huge budgets.

I think he’ll add something a bit quirky to Uncharted that maybe that kind of series needs given its similar opposition (Indiana Jones, Tomb Raider, National Treasure etc.) and if he can nail the characters like he did in 3 Kings then all the better.

  7. Come to think of it, I remember a few months ago in OPM Nolan North let slip that Hugh Jackman was the No. 1 pick for the role.

  8. Ever since this movie was first mentioned I thought if Nolan North didn’t have dibs on the role, Nathan Fillion was the perfect choice. His character in firefly and serenity was almost the same man as Drake in a different setting.

    • Nolan North would do a good job, but he’s a little old I think…

  9. Set sail for negative reviews and a disappointing box-office performance!

    • Yep. Always happens. I had hopes for the Halo movie, as it was to be directed by Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings), but it was cancelled later D:

      • I do find it surprising that they haven’t considered a mo-cap affair with Nolan North and the Drake looking exactly as he does in the games.

  10. if they fuck it up there everyone fanboy or person who liked the game will be very pissed. they might do in the style of indiana jones. they better get the right person for elena.
