September’s US Sales ‘Figures’

So, as you’ll have heard, we won’t be getting exact figures from NPD anymore, making the job of seeing who’s sold what incredibly difficult.  Still, it’s possible to pull certain things from all kinds of bits of data, so here’s what we can gather from September’s sales figures over in the States.

Top selling software:

  • Halo: Reach (Microsoft, Xbox 360) – 3.3 Million
  • Madden NFL 11 (Electronic Arts, Xbox 360, PS3, PS2, Wii, PSP)
  • Dead Rising 2 (Capcom, Xbox 360, PS3, PC)
  • NHL 11 (EA, Xbox 360, PS3)
  • FIFA Soccer 11 (EA, Xbox 360, PS3, PS2, PSP, Nintendo DS)
  • Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep (Square Enix, PSP)
  • Mafia II (Take 2 Interactive, Xbox 360, PS3, PC)
  • Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions (Activision Blizzard, PS3, 360, NDS, Wii)
  • Metroid: Other M (Nintendo, Wii)
  • Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Activision Blizzard, Xbox 360, PS3, PC)

In terms of hardware, only Microsoft (who are up 37% year on year) and Nintendo have submitted their figures, apparently Sony have declined to do so.

  • Xbox 360: 483,989 units
  • DS: 403,000 units
  • Wii: 254,000 units

With regards to actual monetary values, it’s over toVenturebeat who have come up with the following data.  It’s definately still showing a considerable decline, but the numbers continue to make staggering reading.

  • Software: $614 million (-6%)
  • Hardware: $383 million (-19%)
  • Accessories: $180 million (+13%)
  • Total: $1.18 billion (-8%)

Hardly as exciting as previous NPD months, but when they’re not giving the exact figures out (for both hardware and software) it’s practically impossible to see who’s ‘winning’.  As a result, we all lose, and this will potentially be the last US sales post on TheSixthAxis as a result.

  1. Sony not submitting figures for PS3 hardware sales because Move hasn’t shifted as many extra PS3s as they had hoped?

  2. Huge hike in accessories. I’m guessing thats down to the move and their “impressive” figures.

  3. The 360 has really got its mojo back in it’s homeland

Even if Sony’s figures aren’t all that, it’s better than a no show. I wonder if Sony’s reluctance to send figures is the reason that npd will no longer have them.

With Kinect hype, surely the upward trend will continue

It’s a good job Sony has the rest of the world to do well in

    • Always amazes me to see such loyalty to home brands. Still, I can’t stand one region’s figures and I wish we could get global results.

I know the PS3 and the PSP increased again this month but forget which site I was reading that on.

    • I’m sure Halo Reach had a helping hand in Microsoft’s sales. Seems odd that Sony don’t want to release their figures though, it will just fuel a load of rumours and gossip – and journalists will assume the worst anyway.

Since when did NPD stop issuing actual sales numbers? I must have missed the announcement on that one…

      • I bet they sold in the 200,000’s or less and that’s why they haven’t released their sales.

  4. I’m glad there are no sales-figures anymore.

In the old days no consumer gave a fart about sales-figures. The games matter and that is all. Numbers (sales, scores, processor-speeds, number of processors, length of your p***s…) are shit. We (as consumers) honestly should not care about them.

But marketing campaigns will continue to tell us how important they are *sigh*

    • Yeah, it probably won’t stop people banging on about them though (NeoGAF’s thread about this month’s NPD numbers is already up to 18 pages of utter piffle). Discussions of sales figures, mostly among people who probably couldn’t manage their own piggy banks, has always been lame. Now they’ll be as uninformed and worthless as Sarah Palin’s Twitter feed.

  5. I enjoy these :( shame they dont mean much now

  6. As well as being last this month with the PS3 and PSP bringing up the rear in the home console and handheld markets I suspect Sony would like to avoid year-on-year comparisons. Last Sep ’09 was stellar for them following the PS3 price cut and Slim launch.

    • Pretty bleak

I’m disappointed they’ve thrown their toys out of the pram

Everyone would understand a dip on year to year comparison following a very successful launch of the Slim, there’s no shame there… I just wonder if their market research shows the trend continuing, with the new 360 pulling further ahead and then buoyed even further by Kinect, so SCEA just thought there’s no point continuing

      • Sony have always been the most reticent to reveal US figures though, so it’s not that unusual for them. Nintendo are generally happiest to and we always hear from Mr Greenberg when MS have big numbers.

The only positive news I can find from September for Sony is that they beat their August weekly sales averages for both PSP and PS3. Though given what a poor month August was (http://www.thesixthaxis.com/2010/09/10/august-npd-summer-sales-slump/) with Sony coming 4th and 5th them as well, it’s not much to crow about.

  7. That was a disappointing read and through no fault of your’s nofi. I can see why there would be little point in repeating this every month but it’s a shame.
