Rumour: Sledgehammer COD Game Is Sci-Fi

Pondering on the future of Call of Duty, a writer on Gamasutra, namely Chris Morris, reveals the following:

“Industry sources say Sledgehammer’s Call of Duty will be set in the future and feature, for lack of a better term, space Marines, a very big step for a franchise that has historically based itself on realism. “

This is not the first time rumours of a space setting for Call of Duty have surfaced, pre-implosion Infinty Ward were rumoured to becreating something spacey and back in May Activision registered website domains for Advanced, Secret, Space and Future Warfare.

  1. If there’s one demographic we’re falling down in in gaming, it’s the Space Marine. Oh, wait …

    • As it happens, I’d love to see someone create something to rival Halo. Ok, Halo isn’t really for me but it’s definitely in a sub-genre of FPS that I feel other devs have left alone for the simple reason is that it’ll always be compared to Bungie’s efforts.

  2. “a franchise that has historically based itself on realism”

I’m no CoD hater (I just bought BO), but realism?

    • As in a game set in real world events, you’ll see as you progress through BO, of course there’s nothing real about 1 man taking on hundreds – but I think they mean the backdrop to the action, rather than the action itself.

the guy who set up Sledgehammer was responsible (in part) for Dead Space, so I have high hopes, although BlackOps will be a lot to live up to, unless the multiplayer isn’t balanced

  3. CoD in space! Interesting idea, dead space but without the scary-ness

    • More like Halo, I’d have thought.

      • Nooooooo! That would mean Call of Duty with floaty jumping and bugs bunny aliens. I’d rather COD with a dead space horror twist to it rather than a cartoony shooter (Yes Halo is great but I’d rather a dark game than a bright cuddly cute game like Halo is).

    • or Resistance meets CoD

  4. The title for this article read “Sledgehammer COD Game Rumoured to be Sci-Fi” shouldn’t it?
After all, this is nothing more than a rumour at this point.

  5. well so long as i get to be a jedi

  6. This sounds cool, I would like to play a slightly more gritty version of Halo. So are Treyarch and Sledgehammer alternating now?

    • Don’t forget IW. Just because West and Zampella created Respawn, it doesn’t mean MW3 isn’t going to happen in 2011.

  7. Sounds like an interesting idea, if they can implement it right!

  8. But what will be after space?

Maybe another planet with a desert-like atmosphere and enemies with glowing eyes!

Ooh! Or an underwater shooter! Harpoon guns!

  9. Wouldn’t the CoD future warfare rival the likes of ghost recon future soldier?

  10. I wondered how Call of Duty could possibly steep itself deeper in cliche… then I saw the phrase “space marines”. Seriously?
