Europe Apparently Says “No” To 3D TV

Price comparison site Twenga has done a Europe wide survey comprising of 3000 people in six countries regarding their thoughts on 3D TV.  Only one percent of the UK respondents will be getting a 3D TV this Christmas, although a whopping 48 percent said they would like one.

Cost seems to be the major factor, with 32 percent citing that as a reason for not taking the plunge.  Twelve percent claim the technology isn’t ‘up to snuff’, and a frankly shocking 35 percent just aren’t interested at all.  The tech geek side of me weeps!  One percent of UK respondents didn’t know what 3D TV is.  The equivalent figures for France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands tell a similar story.

Does anyone here have a 3D TV?  From what I’ve seen so far (games and movies wise) I would love a one, but I’m in the ‘too expensive’ camp at the moment.

  1. My parents have a 3d tv and when it plays native 3d content it is stunning. Generating a 3d image from a 2d image is still in its early days though

  2. I’m in the 35%, although I suspect the real percentage is alot higher as we have no idea how that group was sampled. Did they ask gamers or Joe public in the mall?

    AFAICS it has good uses for gaming and sport on TV but besides that it just seems like a big fat waste of money, and most people aren’t gamers.

  3. 3D is here to stay. Like surround sound before it, it serves to immerse you in the experience. Eastenders 3D… probably not, but sport. games and movies make it work. And boy does it work. My father in law (who was not fussed on 3D) bought and watched the Christmas Carol Blu-ray. He loved the film. Then he came to watch the 3D version on my Bravia and LOVED it. He said it made the film more enjoyable to watch and a much more captivating experience. He’s now sold on the tech and is looking to get it I accept people not buying it for rhw cost, but it’s here to stay thank hod and will only become more affordable. Oh and COD in 3D is amazing!

  6. I just got a 28″ full HD tv. I don’t think I’ll be upgrading to 3D any time soon. Way too much cash.

  7. Well i had my 47 in 1080p tv 4 years ago…it’s still going strong, but i want a 3d tv goddamit…

  8. When my current HD TV breaks down I will of course replace it, if 3D is standard in TVs like HD has become and the prices are competitive I’ll jump on in if only for using the 3d stuff on my PS3, but for now I’m huddled in a corner growling and shouting ‘TOO EXPENSIVE’

  9. I’ve a year old Bravia, so I’m not in the market now. Even if I was though, it is the price of (replacement) Glasses that still puts me off. A get-together to watch a movie would require at least 5 of them and in a house-hold where the remotes are tacked together with tape & elastic bands that is just too costly and recurring an expense.

  10. I’ve got a 55″ Samsung LED 3DTV – and I love it. Admittedly we’ve had to download most of the 3D film content as you don’t seem to be able to buy it yet, but for the games it is fantastic. Yes it was more expensive than if we’d just upgraded to a normal LED… but where’s the fun in that? At the end of the day we choose when we want to watch stuff in 2D, and when to watch in 3D. I just wish they would start releasing more films in 3D so we don’t have to spend ages downloading them :(

    • Hey Yahavage, where do you diwnload 3D movies from? I get trailers off youtube but want.more dammit!
