If we’re being completely honest, this information could easily have been added as an addendum to the previous “ITV Player and 4OD stations are now live” post. Then again, we’ve heard nothing of this happening until now so we thought we’d give it its due attention.
Left in the digital dark for so long, Irish PS3 users turning on their shiny black monoliths this morning will be greeted by a new RTÉ Player icon in the TV section. Not just a link to the site, the player is an XL version modified to work on TVs.
RTÉ is like the BBC in Ireland. It’s a statutory body of the Irish government but actually shows more American TV than Irish content. And more British content. And Australian content. Let’s just say that every now and again something appears with Irish people talking funny.
Check out what the player looks like below. And it must be kismet, but who’s that gurning right back at us? Yes! Westlife! Ireland’s greatest export since bankruptcy!

Well, I’ll be damned. I asked RTÉ this back in Oct, here’s what they said:
“Thank you for contacting RTÉ player with your query. At present the RTÉ player is not supported on any games console. However, we are aware of the availability of Adobe Flash on a number of consoles such as the PS3, but we cannot guarantee that the RTÉ Player will work effectively on them at present. We are working on developing a large screen version for PS3 users. We do not have a specific lauch date at present but we will update users when one has been confirmed. We hope you enjoy using the service.”
Yippee!!!! I better email them back to say thanks!!!
Kovacs
Might want to mention they also LIED to you. No date? Back in October? Did they just knock this up over a weekend?
;)

RTÉ lying is fairly normal, actually delivering at any point on something ‘newfangled’ completely unusual. You should see the Weather Forecast it’s only one step above fuzzy felt!
eirekun
Sorry Lee / Kovacs, forgot it was you for a second. Of course you’ve seen RTÉ’s weather forecast. Does anyone else remember fuzzy felt?
paulleeper2430
living in northern Ireland and they don’t give it to us i am outraged
Kovacs
You have BBC iPlayer, 4OD and ITV Player instead (not to mention the Video Store). I think you’re doing okay!

@ paulleeper
I used to use the RTE player in the PS3’s browser and had no problems with it. I even watched the Late Late Toy Show last year on my PS3.
You should check to see if it works for you in the browser.
jcor
I should point out that I’m in Dublin though. Its worth checking to see if it works that way though. I know it’ll be awkward having to go in to the browser rather than having an icon on the Cross Media Bar.
If it doesn’t work, sure at least you have everything Kovacs pointed out to fall back on ;)
MadiesInMeBoot
Deadly, hopefully there will be more off the same down the line! Now I can catch up on “Fade street”, yipee! *Gets rope and a chair* =P
jcor
They should have Bachelor’s Walk & Fergus’ Wedding on it.
Kovacs
Oh Jesus. Don’t mention Fade Street here. We might have to try and explain it to our British friends and end up spontaneously combusting. Most TV is tripe. Irish TV is tripe in a blender. On fire.
ElGuason
cool i guess…
