It’s taking its sweet time but we’re finally seeing some more full retail games become available for digital download. Last week saw the digital version of Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Vegas 2 arrive at the whopping price of £23.99/€29.99 and now, today (well, technically yesterday), Prototype has appeared on XBL for £19.99/$29.99. It will be available on the NA version of the PlayStation Store later today. There is currently no news of a European release, though we’re assuming if it’s not this Wednesday it will be another one soon enough.
The big question is: who is going to pay these prices? You can pick up a disc version of the same title right now for £11.99/€16.99 on Play.com. We’re sure if you look around a little more you could possibly pick it up even cheaper.
Prototype 2 was announced last week at the VGAs.

$29.99? That’s a little bit higher than I thought it would be.

Well I bought [PROTOTYPE] around a month ago for £10 on Amazon, with Fallout 3 for just over £5. So who on earth would buy it for that much?! And I’m still baffled at R6 Vegas 2 being that expensive…

I remember the ps store update on the blog the other week (same update as assassins creed) at first said there would be a full game trial of prototype, but was removed later, so we’ll get it soon.
I used to have it. it’s a pretty fun game once you understand what you’re supposed to do.

Kill everything that moves?

that’s cool but i agree i don’t like how they have this digital copies for higher prices than they do in stores!

What is the point of these releases when the pricing is way off the mark. Prototype is £12 new from Play.com
It’s the same with Assassin’s Creed, who’s going to pay £23 when you can get it brand new for a tenner or even cheaper pre-owned.
Rocket_345
You can get AC2 for less than £23 now never mind AC.

I would argue that its worth the extra money, when I got LBP with PS+ I played it non stop until I platinumed it, I hadn’t touched the disk version in months. You also get a version of a game that can never get damaged or lost and can be kept there, well, forever. Maybe that’s just me.

All good points. Are these bonuses worth double the price though?
You could also argue the opposite. Why are you paying more and not even getting something physical? The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo paperback is roughly €9 on Amazon. The eBook is €7.
Just playing Devil’s advocate here. You make some very valid points, but why isn’t digital at least the same price as physical at this stage? Will it ever?

In fairness, given the the lack of retailer costs, and physical manufacturing costs, digital downloads ought to pan out cheaper than their disc equivalent surely.

Publisher are retards. Who pay does prices when you can get 1/3 of that price.

Hopfully we finally get the PS+ version promised. Play that for an hour then maybe buy it on disc if I like it.
Grey_Ghost13
Digital downloads need to be priced alot lower, especially if they apear months after the retail disks are out. But maybe this is the way publishers want to be, kill off the pre-owned market and force you to pay over the top prices for the digital version!

This was confirmed for the EU as PS+ Members get an hour triel. Expected tomorrow
