DCUO Gets Priced And Dated

Sony Online Entertainment have today announced that upcoming MMO, DC Universe Online, will release on January 11th in the States and three days later in EU territories. The PlayStation 3 version will go on sale at an RRP of $59.99 (forty quid) with a monthly subscription rate of a tenner. SOE have yet to comment on whether subscription bundles will be available, and if PlayStation Plus members will receive an exclusive discount. However, they have come forward to announce a lifetime subscription which will cost a hefty $200 (roughly £150.)

DC Universe Online is the first ever subscription-based MMO to launch on the PlayStation. No one is a fan of monthly bills, especially console gamers, though SOE are confident that DCUO will garner a strong membership, as Chris Cao explained to IGN:

A little over a decade ago, people questioned subscription fees on a PC. They’d never played an MMO before and they weren’t sure why they’d pay monthly to play it. Then they stepped into those first worlds, lived online, and came to realize that the experience was worth the expense. The same thing is going to happen on the PS3. People are always willing to pay for good games, especially when they continue to grow and change. We’ve made a great game in DCUO and we’re going to keep adding to it with each and every update.

Information regarding in-game trophies has also been published, including 10 gold, 2 silvers and of course a prestigious platinum trophy:

  1. Can’t see me going for that.

I wonder how long it takes to reach level 30. Might get to be a pricy platinum for you trophy wh°res outthere.

  2. I have been playing the beta now and although I do like how they made the game I just can’t afford a subscription of 10€ to play this every month. I played Wow for a few month’s so i’m familiar with MMO but there are so many games I can play online for free that it just doesn’t makes sense to pay to play some game online. There are just too much good games coming out for PS3 i’m afraid I want have time enough to play DCUO enough to make it worth the while to get a subscription

  3. If they offer a plus discount I could be tempted, I would only play it for a few months anyway most likely.

    • yeah thats another problem. It is never going to be a game that i’ll keep coming back to so its pointless me paying 10 quid a month.

    • i thought lvl up would be unlimited
if lvl 30 is max, mth is all u need

ive only had beta a few wks at lvl 15

      • actually only 1wk, but feels like 2 lol

  4. Still downloading the beta after starting last night (i know my connection speed is so slow) but no matter how good it is there is no way am i paying £10 a month although i really wanted it.

  5. I am totally addicted to the beta, but I agree with most of the comments here. Anything over a tenner is ridiculous, and I can’t really see a strong enough flock of console gamers signing up for the monthly subscriptions. I will probably buy a 3 months of play time, see how it goes, and then decide on whether I wish to continue. Personally, I would have got a lifetime subscription for around £120, £150 is just a little too steep.

  6. I liked the Beta and have spent some time on this, but I doubt I would buy this as I can’t be certain I would get my moneys worth. I could buy my monthly subscription only yo get bored, or to find another game that will take my time. For me to pay a tener a month I would need to play nothing else.

  7. As suspected, not for me

  8. Really they should make the game itself very cheap, and have you pay for subscription on top. If it is that addictive, people would happily pay the subscription to keep playing, and it will encourage more initial buyers.

  9. The Beta was decent enough but a tenner a month! It might be worth it if this was just about the only game id played for the next 12 months but I have so many games waiting to be played and there are so many more good games coming out 2011 so…. I think I’ll skip this one. I hope it’s a success though as Im guessing the game itself could be fantastic.

    • Yep thats the problem that i have. I just can’t justify paying that fee as it would mean that i would have to play the game solidly for a year which i know just won’t happen.

  10. I could never justify paying a monthly subscription for gaming.
Its a brave move by SOE, but it is one I think is doomed to failure. I just don’t think that the wider demographic of console owners will be willing to pay monthly subscriptions for a game such as this. The only games that could even be considered popular, therefore powerful, enough to be able to sustain a monthly subscription would be EA Sports games and CoD, (and yet CoD has been confirmed that it wont be going down this route)

    • i would pay sub for cod (decent servers updates & maps,
oh & to never let treyarch touch cod again wd b a deal breake)
