Portal 2 Gets PS3/PC/Mac Cross-Platform Play

So it turns out Gabe Newell wasn’t kidding when he said the PS3 version of Portal 2 would be the best console version, as Valve has just confirmed that it will feature cross-platform play with PC & Mac owners. Also on the cards is cross-platform chat, as well as “persistent cloud-based storage of PS3 saved games”.

In addition to that fantastic bit of news, the PS3 copy of Portal 2 will also come with a key for the PC & Mac version. Valve head honcho, Gabe Newell, had the following to say:

“We made a promise to gamers at E3 that Portal 2 for the PlayStation 3 would be the best console version of the product. Working together with Sony we have identified a set of features we believe are very compelling to gamers. We hope to expand upon the foundation being laid in Portal 2 with more Steam features and functionality in DLC and future content releases.”

Let’s try and keep any mention of cake to a minimum, shall we?

  1. Holy. Crap. That is all.

    • Haha those were my exact thoughts as well!

    • Exactly what i was thinking

  2. *squuuuuuuuuuuueeek* Ladies and gentlemen, this is why Valve fucking owns! Steamplay, cloud-based storage, cross platform chat.

/me kicks EA, Activision, Ubisoft, THQ…… you just got owned by a PC game dev.

    • valve IS an EA dev :P

    • valve IS an EA dev :P

      • Not entirely true. EA distributed Valve’s PS3 games. Valve do not develop games for EA

    • Yeah and what where you squeaking when they did not want to develop the OrangeBox?.. (4thePS3)

  3. This had better not all be a lie, like the cake!

    • where did my companion cube go….

      • I incineratored it. Glados told me if i did that then i would get cake.

    • I bet you didn’t though, the cake is a lie.

  4. So do the ps3 version comes with free cake?:P I really hope Valve will use good servers.

  5. would be nice if it came with a key to the original portal, but that could be asking to much

    • You can get it as part of The Orange Box, pretty cheap on ebay.

    • I would also like this – Am dying to play portal (due to its puzzley elements), but cba with Half Life. A Portal bundle would do me nicely.

  6. Well… This is a triumph

    • Indeed. A huge success.

    • Wow, this news is so delicious and moist

      • like the cake?

      • Look at us still commenting when there’s science to do

      • When I look at Xbox users it makes me glad I’m not you

  7. Wow, that’s a fantastic idea.

  8. So the ps3 version comes with a key for a free pc version aswell?

  9. Aaarg! Which version do I get :/ I’m thinking comfy sofa with a ps3 pad or desktop with mouse controls. Not that I can’t use the pad at all, but having just spent a lot of money on a PC gaming rig. Slightly edging towards PC version atm.

    • Ah but now you can buy both at the same price… tough choice

    • Why not just link your PC upto your HDTV??? thats what i do, best of both worlds then!! ;-)

    • Hmm buy the ps3 version and get the pc version for free hmm well I think I will get the 360 version :P

  10. wow this is amazing……hold on, what does it mean? Does it mean I can buy it for the ps3 and use the mac key to get it free on my mac? I may sound stupid but what does cross platform play actually cover?
Please elaborate or at least speculate…….

    • No elaboration or speculation required. It is what it says it is. When you buy the PS3 version you get a key for the PC/Mac version on Steam. Buy once, play on multiple platforms.

Cross platform simply means that, in coop for example, you could be on your PS3 and playing with a guy elsewhere who’s playing on PC or Mac.

      Unless I’m misinterpreting your question.

      • wow incredible. So this means I can play on my PS3 while my mate plays in the same room on the mac, playing online in co-op.
All for the price of 1 game!!
I think this has crept up from 15th in my must buy games list to number 1.

      • You don’t get a key, all you have to do is link you PSN and Steam accounts.

      • Not sure they want the both of you playing online from the same “key” (eg. one on the PC, one on the PS3). Still, they might be this kind with the licenses. If so, kudos to Valve. Exceptional stuff.

I’d take the mouse and keyboard combination every time.

    • And the cloud saves presumably mean you could start on the PS3, carry on on the Mac or PC, then pick up again on the PS3 again later…

      • That’s what I thought. Brilliant.

      • Wonder how Trophies would work with that, unless they linked the steam achievements and ps3 trophies somehow
