Sony have issued a statement regarding the current PSN downtime, which has been since Wednesday evening.
“An external intrusion on our system has affected our PlayStation Network and Qriocity services,” says the brief blog post, echoed across both the EU and US versions.
“In order to conduct a thorough investigation and to verify the smooth and secure operation of our network services going forward, we turned off PlayStation Network & Qriocity services on the evening of Wednesday, April 20th.”
“Providing quality entertainment services to our customers and partners is our utmost priority.”
“We are doing all we can to resolve this situation quickly, and we once again thank you for your patience. We will continue to update you promptly as we have additional information to share.”
We’re assuming ‘external intrusion’ means some kind of internet-based hack. Frustrated? Don’t be.

Hacking attempt compromised servers and corrupted data? Now doing full restore while fixing the security issues?… This is getting more and more serious given the accumulating down time. Running a 24/7 worldwide service is mission critical and this is a call-to-action for all such service providers. It is image destruction in the long run.

Ah, this may all explain why I’ve only been able to log into Psn 3 times in the past week and a half or so. I just downloaded new maps for Killzone 3 as well. Hopefully it is all sorted soon and, if it is down to hackers, instead of blaming Skynet, we should maybe send a Terminator after them.

Don’t know if anyone else has received this message or if it has anything to do with the downtime but 5 days before the network went down, I received a message stating that if I send this said message to ALL of my friends, I’ll receive $50 in my funds. The code in the message was valid but was unable to add any funds. The beginning of the message said something about a “protest” working.

Wonder when the “external intrusion” was and seeing as Sony found the only cure to be pulling the plug, does that suggest our personal details including name, address, card details w/security code etc have been held in a less than secure manner?
And if so are they going to delay telling us? This could be a disaster for Sony…

Having shut the system down, it sounds like it’s as much to stop anything getting out as letting anyone else get in.

Pulling the plug makes perfect sense three cases:
If they don’t know how any intruder gained initial access, or if they haven’t figured out how to close the hole yet. Going online without closing the hole means it will likely be used again.
Backing up _everything_. Anything that can be used as clues and/or proof about what/how/who/why needs to be preserved. If they have been broken into then need to figure out how far in the attackers got, what is safe and what is compromised.

I think there would have been a better response from people if they’d said this at first, but never mind.
If they turned it off though, it suggests something more serious than just a DDoS attack. My money is on trying to get card details etc or trying to trick consoles into downloading a fake (or custom?) firmware update perhaps (I don’t know if thats possible, how linked are the PSN and update servers?)

If they switched it off themselves it must be serious intrusion indeed. It doesn’t sound like it’s a denial of service attack but maybe some hacker actually got access to PS store or peoples accounts database. That would be quite worrying.
