Sony Update On PSN, Cite “External Intrusion”

Sony have issued a statement regarding the current PSN downtime, which has been since Wednesday evening.

“An external intrusion on our system has affected our PlayStation Network and Qriocity services,” says the brief blog post, echoed across both the EU and US versions.

“In order to conduct a thorough investigation and to verify the smooth and secure operation of our network services going forward, we turned off PlayStation Network & Qriocity services on the evening of Wednesday, April 20th.”

“Providing quality entertainment services to our customers and partners is our utmost priority.”

“We are doing all we can to resolve this situation quickly, and we once again thank you for your patience. We will continue to update you promptly as we have additional information to share.”

We’re assuming ‘external intrusion’ means some kind of internet-based hack.  Frustrated?  Don’t be.

  1. When they say “We will continue to update you promptly as we have additional information to share”. I hope they mean they’ll start updating us promptly now… instead of they already feel they’ve been updating us promptly and we’re going to get updated as usual?
So they turned it off, then said nothing, then said we don’t know why it’s down- give us 2 days, now when the 2 days are up they finally confess they turned it off but still say nothing? Until Sony can show proof of an external intrusion I ‘m not going to believe anything they say since they’d rather lie and mislead their customers then just tell us the truth up front.

  2. I’m actually glad PSN went down. I have finally got around to finishing RE5 and KZ3 story.

  3. Skynet was meant to go live a few days ago and indeed has been posting on twitter http://twitter.com/OfficialSkynet . Last week THIS http://www.thesixthaxis.com/2010/02/03/what-do-336-ps3s-look-like/ went live. Since then half the web has been fecked. I warned you, i did. I warned you but did you listen? No. *gets tin foil hat and hides under the stairs*

  4. My only problem with that statement is that when they said we will continue to update you promptly, they could have told us on Wednesday that they turned it off.

  5. Interesting situation, and one that I hope will be resolved quickly. Odd that groups aren’t claiming responsibility though – what is going on?

  6. I saw it in The Daily Telegraph today, on the second page. It’s bad press for PlayStation, but it wouldn’t be justified, as this article explains.

  7. I’m sorry Dave. I’m afraid I can’t do that.

    • Turn on the PSN, Hal. Hal? HAL!

      • Thie conversation serves no purpose. Goodbye Dave.

  8. Not really missed it to be honest.

  9. I have just very recently found out about the whole GeoHotz, Sony and Anonymous situation. If it was the latter that caused this then I think its kind of sad that these individuals have gone to so much trouble to do this because Sony didn’t want their PS3’s hacked. But whoever has done this must be extremely clever to cripple the WHOLE of PSN. I wouldn’t even know where to start :p
Lets hope this issue gets resolved soon and Sony and Anonymous, or whoever did this, learn to et along….. maybe :p haha

  10. Time will tell….
