New Burnout Has Cartoon Violence, Encouragement

God bless* the ESRB, they announce more new games than the average E3 press conference. This time it’s the turn of Criterion’s latest entry in the Burnout series. Confirming the title as Burnout: Crash, which was heavily indicated by earlier evidence, they’ve listed the criteria for rating it as follows:

This is an action game in which players earn points for creating traffic pileups. From a top-down perspective, players initiate crashes by driving ‘cartoony’ vehicles (e.g., cars, trucks, vans, buses) into busy intersections; multiple crashes trigger score multipliers and rack up large ‘bills’ of property damage. Each level is accompanied by crashing sounds, small explosions, and vocal encouragement (e.g., ‘Cool,’ ‘Maximum Carnage!’). In some levels, players are instructed to crash into police cars (e.g., ‘Crash them before they bust you!’); in other sequences, oversized airplanes, tornados, lobster monsters, and UFOs slide across the screen, destroying any vehicles in their path

So that sounds like the classic approach to Burnout that many missed from 2008’s otherwise wonderful Burnout: Paradise.

*you can have a deity of your choosing bless them. Or no deity at all, we’re very open minded.

  1. top…down??

    • Ye I thought the same.
Has the platforms for this title been announced yet? Maybe its a 3DS title?

    • “top down” – whut de heyl?

    • hope its not GTA / GTA London style……. *worried* maybe its for Facebook?

    • Maybe an i/Android release to go along with the PS3/xBox one?

  2. Bit concerned by ‘top-down perspective’ & ‘cartoony’ vehicles, but i’ll wait & see how this turns out before passing judgement methinks.

    • Yeah, sounds like reversing the two things I liked most about burnout.

  3. Sounds good except the top down part. I’m hoping that’s just a generalised term and they mean isometric.
Otherwise it sounds exactly like crash junctions which is what we all want.

  4. Not the lobster monsters?! They found me!

    • Yeah..uhm, what’s up with lobster monsters? And UFO’s?

  5. top down perspective, and cartoony vehicles?
i’m not sure i like the sound of that.

  6. Seems like I’ll never have any good ol Burnout fun on the PS3. Maybe a HD remake of 1-4 would be in order!

  7. Man, it’ll be like that time the Zelda series went all cartoony and stuff. I remember how everyone hated that game.

  8. When it was announced I was interested. Now I’m completely disinterested.

Don’t see why it’s top down, cartoony, has UFO’s etc?

It should be chase/interior/bumper cam and a road with a junction or something similar.

Personally I’d get rid of the aftertouch thing and the multipliers to go through etc. Burnout 2 : Point of Impact is still the best.

  9. ….Lobster Monsters?

  10. Sounds like a PSN download title to me. Shame, was looking forward to a proper burnout :(
