PS Vita The New Name For NGP?

How to attract attention: claim that you know something about new PlayStation hardware that nobody else does.  Case in point: Gamespundit.com, who have posted up a story suggesting the NGP is going to be called PS Vita.

“Today we received some new, and exclusive, information from an anonymous source,” says the site boldly, which appears to have been going for a little while now. “The official name of the NGP!”

“Rumor has it that the new Sony handheld will bear the name PS Vita. Vita is Latin/Italian for ‘life’. Does Sony hope to bring life back into their stock? Do they want to rejuvenate the PSP? Revitalize your needs for portable gaming?”

“Our source tells us that this will be the definite and final name of the new system Sony will bring out at the end of 2011.”

There some images that Gamespundit claim back up their source, although the page is filled with disclaimers – it’s branded a rumour and we’re asked to take all of the above with a grain of salt, so it’s not clear what’s going on.

It’s an interesting claim though, but we seem to remember hearing that the system had similar a codename before it was called the NGP – so whether Sony have reverted back to that with a spelling tweak, or someone’s got confused we’re not sure.

It’s almost certainly going to be named at E3 though, one way or another.

Roll on next week…

  1. Don’t like this name at all. Just not a good name for a games device. I actually preferred the name NGP.

    • NGP stood for Next Generation Portable, right? There is nothing in that name that implies that it is linked to the Playstation family. Also, when the next generation after that arrives it would still be called Next Generation Portable, which would be pretty stupid.

      • I’m not saying it should be called the NGP. I’m just pointing out that this rumoured new name is rubbish and that the codename was actually better sounding.

      • NGP vs PSV – I think PSV would still be the better name. It has the PS in it, just like the PSP, while the NGP doesn’t say anything about the device manufacturer / brand at all.

      • What? Sony PlayStation NGP. :P

    • SPSNGP… come on…

  2. How about PSNGP?
Vita ain’t nice at all :\

    • Because Playstation Next Generation Portable just rolls off the tongue…

      • True thought I’m sure Sony would prefer to keep the brand name ‘PS’ in their consoles.

      • Thus, Playstation Vita?

  3. I don’t like that name as it sounds like a cheap Mini. I prefer NGP or at least PSP2. I hope this is a temp name untill they come up with a better name for a portable Console.

  4. What an awful name!

  5. It’s going to be known as the PSV.
Sounds quite similar to PSP and PS3 when put that way, and I like it.

  6. PSX!…. oh wait

  7. If they release a slimmer version later on will it be called Vitalite *bad-dum-tish* thank you, goodnight and don’t forget to tip your waiter.

  8. Vita is gay.

Kaz Harai said PSP2 in a interview.

    • Are you implying that being gay would be something negative?

      • No, I think Awayze is talking about the important new features that it brings over the PSP/iPhone. For example you can now stroke your fingers around the back of it and wait to see what reaction stuff around the front has. ;-)

      • No but giving a console the name Vita sounds girly.

Lol people just use the word gay these to describe things that aren’t even homosexual. I think “Vita” is kinda feminine and seeing mostly men will buy the NGP, I for one don’t want to say I have a PSP Vita, sounds like a chic thing. :/

      • Yes, I certainly wouldn’t want to be caught with something called Vita with my already non existent self esteem…
It’s a name. It means Life. Nobody is crying over the Playstation Life feature on their PS3s. Not everything must have an uber manly name.

  9. Not a great name, but to be honest I’m not that fussed as long as it works, and the games are up to scratch.

  10. No, please not PSV. It will just constantly remind me of Eindhoven and Ruud van Nistelrooy. May aswell have the P-STI or the P-BNP (Brand New Portable!!!)
