GRID Servers Closed

Codemasters have decided to close down the multiplayer servers for their 2008 game, Race Driver: Grid on PS3 and PC, although the Xbox 360 servers remain running as normal according to MCV.

“After three years of service, 2008’s Race Driver: GRID’s online play service has been discontinued for the PS3 and PC editions of the game,” say Codemasters.

Some people will be very disappointed with this; there are still people in my friends list who play this from time to time. In fact, some people are very disappointed and haven’t hesitated in showing this, taking to the Codemasters forums in order to complain, in true internet style.

What do you think? Is GRID past its time and should the online have been put to sleep, or are Codemasters neglecting the fans?

Should they have kept them open until a sequel surfaces?

  1. P*sstake.

  2. Shame, its a great game and I enjoy it but Ive not been online in it for at least a year. If I wanted to keep the servers up and running then I should have played it more.

  3. This is a massive shame. I’m sure they had good reason for shutting the servers down, especially after only 3 years, but hey ho it had to happen sometime. Can they spend some money on Grid 2 now?

  4. Gutted. To be fair not played it for a while now but a Grid meet gets mentioned every now and then and it would be nice to think we could do one if we wanted. A bit of warning would have been nice (ok, there might have been, I don’t really know!) se we could have had one last outing.

    • I was planning on doing another one after the GT5 champs but I guess thats all gone tits up now.

Really disappointed by this as it was a great online game and with no sequel in immediate sight it seems a strange decision.

  5. Can’t they release a dedicated PC server download so that people can continue to play? At least on PC? Clearly this would need a bit of coding on Codie’s part but still….

  6. Grid even all this time later is one of the best racers out there.

Imo, IT IS the best racer out there. its a shame codemasters are taking away the online portion cause i think the game still had a lot of life in it

  7. see i dont get why they cant just patch in a system where users can create a server on the console, many games have this.
you look for servers or create your own, screw gamespy if they dont want to host how about alternative methods.

  8. Lsme! Release GRID 2 already!

  9. To be fair, they must have the numbers, they must see there are relatively few people playing this now, and took the decision based on the fact they’re not going to be pissing all that many people off. I bet most of the people moaning haven’t played it for years. I say fair enough.

  10. Are they going to patch the game and release software to allow for fan-hosted servers to continue the multiplayer? TBH all games that have closed servers like this should have an endgame patch plan to allow the multiplayer to continue after the ‘official’ servers have closed. Not to do so is simply a waste of the time and effort the devs put into the game, and is also a mote disrespectful to those that bought it.
