Codemasters have decided to close down the multiplayer servers for their 2008 game, Race Driver: Grid on PS3 and PC, although the Xbox 360 servers remain running as normal according to MCV.
“After three years of service, 2008’s Race Driver: GRID’s online play service has been discontinued for the PS3 and PC editions of the game,” say Codemasters.
Some people will be very disappointed with this; there are still people in my friends list who play this from time to time. In fact, some people are very disappointed and haven’t hesitated in showing this, taking to the Codemasters forums in order to complain, in true internet style.
What do you think? Is GRID past its time and should the online have been put to sleep, or are Codemasters neglecting the fans?
Should they have kept them open until a sequel surfaces?

If there was a Grid 2 then people wouldn’t be fussed, but plenty of peeps on my friends list still play list and I still dip back in from time to time so it is a shame. However, the buck has to stop at some point.

To be perfectly honest, if they would have just added some trophies to the game, I imagine that the servers would still be buzzing – I know a few people that hold this game in very high regard, but stopped playing once they were hooked on collecting virtual bling.

I still play this occasionally. I realise they have to close them at some point but I’d rather they’d waited until a sequel was nearing shelves, or at the very least confirmed!

I suppose as they have to provide the servers for PS3 & PC games they want to save money.

This is ridiculous. Codies have put out various racers since, but seeing as there’s no direct sequel and nothing alarmingly similar, current GRID players will not easily have somewhere logical to migrate to.
Are they trying to get people into the more profitable franchises like F1 or DIRT, so that by the time GRID 2 launches we’ll be playing both, perhaps?
What’s the given reasoning?

I think they said the third party company that was running the servers decided not to renew their contract. As far as I know it was Gamespy.

This is a very sad day, despite me not playing this online for months now, many a night was wasted playing this online and have good memories were had. I wish they would hurry up with a grid 2 aswell.

It’s a damn shame. Used to love playing it online with friends. It’s taken them ages to getting round to making a sequel as well. In my opinion GRID is the best out of the 3 racing titles Codemasters made in the last 3 or 4 years.

By titles I just mean like the DiRT series etc ;) Should have worded it better.

F1 2010 :)

It is tough between F1 2010 and GRID. GRID online with my friends though was just awesome though.

It’s a bit early, isn’t it?

It wasn’t their fault though was it? That CVG article says that CM say it was cos the third party declined to extend their contract, so they wanted to keep them going…

really enjoyed GRID at the time, the driving is excellent, and had a lot of fun online, im sure it the online will be missed
