New Soul Calibur V Trailer And Details

Namco had quite a major presence at this year’s Comic-Con in San Diego. They streamed Tekken Tag Tournament 2 all day long for three days straight, announced that Tekken Hybrid now includes a Tekken Tag 2 demo, and Soul Calibur V was on display. It sure is an awesome time to be a fighting game fan right now.

Check out the new trailer below.

Some new details about the gameplay mechanics were shown at Comic-Con. Evading attacks is a bit easier now because double tapping to sidestep moves the character around the opponent more. That technique is referred to as the “quick step.”

Namco also introduced the Brave Edge system. With this mechanic you can enhance the properties of certain techniques in exchange for half a bar of meter. Basically, it’s like how EX moves work in Street Fighter IV. This will sometimes allow you to extend your combos with moves that wouldn’t normally work. The other new mechanic shown was the Critical Edge, which takes a full bar of meter to use. These are essentially flashy super moves that can deal a lot of damage.

The meter management system wasn’t elaborated on as much as I’d like. You can store up to two bars of meter in Soul Calibur V. It seems like building meter is mostly done by attacking your opponent. I did notice that the person on the receiving end of a beating does gain a bit of meter as well, but not as much. This is probably something that’s still being tweaked since it’s so early in development.

You can see more of the game in action below, courtesy of Gamespot. This is the first time we get to see uninterrupted gameplay. It looks pretty awesome.

  1. Can’t wait to play it :)

  2. i’ve always liked the soul calibur games.
never been the best at them but i’ve enjoyed them, i’ve also thrown a few pads because of them, trying to beat the apprentice in iv? damn, that was tough, especially on my joypad.

i hope they bring back the character creator, it’s a shame more fighters don’t include one.

  3. superb
