Counter-Strike: GO Cross Platform Play NOT Confirmed

Cast your mind back to before Portal 2. I know it may be painful for some of you but try, and you will remember the bizarre goings on when Valve announced Move support, and then did not, saying it was a mistranslation (it wasn’t).

Now look at the screenshot below, taken from the official Counter-Strike: Global Offensive debut trailer.

Cross-platform play! Woohoo! Now over to Valve’s Chet Faliszek. There will be cross-platform play across the PC and PS3, right Chet?

“We’re looking at it.”

But the launch trailer, released by Valve, that’s you, the company making the game, clearly states there will be cross platform play. Look, it’s just up there in big gold letters. Can you not see?

“It’s something that we’ll find out during the beta. We don’t want to hamstring one platform to another. So we’ll start the beta on PC and then at the end of that we’ll give it over to the 360 players, because we just don’t have that ability to do incremental updates and things like that on the 360.”

  1. It wont be the first time or the last time somone says that theyre game will do this and that… I’m looking at you Peter Molyneux..

    • Here here, the mans such a liar it’s untrue. He missed his calling and should have gone into politics.

  2. I’ll put it simply: After playing it at Eurogamer I can safely say the game is a huge pile of arse anyway and the only thing that would have convinced me to pick up a copy would be if I could play alongside my mates who are hardcore PC gamers. If this feature has been taken away so too has my sale.

    • I thought the trailer a month or so ago looked really pony, glad I’m not the only one. Seemed very average

      • I think the problem is it doesn’t feel like CS at all, almost like its trying to be a COD clone. I have no problem with COD as a shooter, but CS had a unique play-style that made it stand out from the pack. All of that seems to be gone in this new release and instead it just feels like Quake mixed with MW2.

    • Can you quantify your assessment of “huge pile of arse” by answering these three questions:

      1) Are/were you at any time a regular play of previous version of CS?
      2) Was it arse because it looked like a 13 year old game?
      or
      3) Was it arse because you know CS inside and out and the gameplay wasn’t there.

I’m not asking this to be facetious, but CS isn’t still popular today because it’s a mind blowing game – it’s still popular today (13 years later) because it got the multiplayer balance just right. I honestly haven’t played CS in at least 8 years, but I have massively fond memories of the years I did.

      • No problem :)
        1) I regularly played CS 1.6 and a bit of Source “back in the day”
2 and 3) While the visuals aren’t terrific, its definately the gameplay that made me die a little inside. Speaking to someone who has played a lot of CS in his time, you’ll know the series has always had a unique feel to it that worked brilliantly in a team-based environment. It all feels a little too arcadey now, like you’re playing a round of TDM on MW2 than a strategic team-based shooter.

Who knows, the end product may end up differently but my mates and I were not impressed. Hope that helps :)

      • It does, cheers.

I can’t help but think that if I’m being completely objective I would have to say CS (1.6 or source) was also massively arcadey. Certainly nothing was dynamic, you knew that if you ran down corridor X for 2.3 seconds and threw a frag gren at the wall at just the right angle, it would always, ALWAYS, land at the feet of the other team who had spawned and were running full steam to intercept you.

I guess in some ways that made it precise. There were variables that could favour one or the other team, there was no wind, no blowing snow or dust, no destructible walls. Map design was paramount to balance.

I’m still keen to see what they have done with GO, it would surprise me massively if Valve had failed to realise what really made CS so massively popular – in fact, I’m confident they haven’t failed to realise it, but perhaps they have failed to re-execute it.

      • People were moaning when Source came along. People will mourn when GO will come along. I’ll reserve judgement until I’ve played it myself. Played CS since 1.3 very extensively and I managed to keep an open mind about it even when Source was released. I’ll try to do the same here. Even if it’s not as good as the old versions, I’m not a fan of CoD so this could still be a better choice for me in the end.

  3. cross platform could also mean Pc – Mac couldn’t it?

  4. I was gutted when Move-support turned out to be missing in Portal, but don’t really care about this. It seems Valve has problems with communication.

  5. Next they’ll tell us they’re “thinking about” keyboard/mouse support on PS3 despite having already confirmed it.

The conspiracy theorist in me wonders how much pressure MS could exude on Valve to not include PS3 in their cross platform plans.

    /tinfoil hat

  6. Personally I’d prefer to play against other PS3 pads gamers only – so if that’s still an option with X platform play, then I’d say go for it.

There’d be nothing worse than playing CS with a pad VS a mouse, there is simply no contest there – espicially the way CS handles.

I’m looking forward to this with just a little of excitement, hopefully it won’t veer to much into the land of COD – and stays true to Counter Strike.

  7. Sounds like the valve molyneux filter has broken down again

  8. I love Valves games, but their PR is just awful.
