Tweak It: Fallout 3/New Vegas

The fanbase that BioWare established with Dragon Age: Origins is clearly still split by Dragon Age II which I asked you to tweak last week. A number of you still seem to just want Dragon Age Origins 2 but I have to wonder if that would have just led to comments that BioWare had done nothing to develop the series.

[drop2]Some of the comments about a lack of continuity serve to highlight how important it is with Dragon Age to have played through the DLC for the first game and to preferably have a save game to import to the second. The events in Dragon Age: Awakening help bridge the two games in both story and returning characters while Witch Hunt helps tie up a significant loose end. The other DA:O DLC is more standalone though Leliana’s Song expands her background which is very relevant to DA:2 and its own DLC.

Some of you also seemingly haven’t played or returned to the game since its mid-April patch that added the “Auto Attack” option that saves you having to repeatedly press the attack button as well as fixing a host of other issues and niggles.

2ofclubs brought up an issue that both myself and MayContainEvil had forgotten about until reminded:

My main annoyance with numero 2 is that only Hawke could equip different armour. That just seems like a huge and pointless step back as far as I’m concerned. I like to see the other characters evolve visually as I play and accrue as sorts of armour.

While it is true that the upgrades to your companions armour that you pick up during the game do slowly develop the look of the of their apparel the only dramatic change in their appearance happens should you romance particular characters. That is in stark contrast to the complete freedom offered regarding clothing your party in Origins.

This week I would like you to tweak both Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas. I have not played New Vegas but from what I know of the game it changes little other than setting for the game besides adding the optional hardcore mode with its weighty bullets and need to eat, sleep and drink.

Leaving aside the fact that both games suffer from more than their fair share of bugs that seem to have affected some players more than others, what I miss in Fallout 3 is any real sense of engagement with the characters or locations. There seems to be no development of relationships beyond them being someone to talk to to get a quest and somewhere to go to do it.

The other thing that I would really have liked to deepen my Fallout 3 experience is a much greater number of songs being played on the in-game radio stations. The songs that are there are certainly well-chosen I just wish there were many more of them as the repetition becomes wearisome far too quickly.

What tweaks would improve your experience and enjoyment of post-apocalyptic America?

  1. As much as I loved NV, some improved visuals and lack of day-one bugs would have been nice. Otherwise the game is awesome

  2. 1. Less bugs
    2. New engine

Not much else apart from that.

This is so true, more so in Vegas I found. I REALLY need to buy the DLC and get some more New Vegas time in myself.
I do love the new ones, they took some time to grow on me, but they still don’t really match up to the originals.

Here’s hoping an MMO does see the light of day and its good

  4. Right I don’t care about Dragon Age so i have nothing to say on that, but i did like the companions judging you on your actions, that should be in more games.

I’m surprised to see how many people played FO3 but not FO:NV, it betters the third in so many ways, i have had so many argument s with work colleges and friends about which is the better.
Any way this isn’t really tweaks to the games but what i would like to see in 4, i liked the New York setting that sounds cool, the rumour is that it will be set in New England as this was being built up in FO3 being renamed the Common Wealth, (if you remember the mission on Rivet City with the android) it seems that will use the Skyrim engine for 4 so that would be nice, i would really like having the Fallout landscape rendered in the way that have the skyrim map, looking down on all the broken buildings and destroyed landscape (seeing where the missiles might have hit in that area, and being able to visit them, and know where pockets of radiation is, they should take out all the invisible walls that were in New Vegas, they wanted to direct the player too much, and in a game with that much freedom i was quite disappointed when now being able to walk over certain mountains and choose my own way into certain areas.

I would like to be able to customise the clothing in the way that some one else said, being able to where different tops and bottoms, but should be extended more, like the NCR Ranger riot gear, with the jacket over the body armour, i would like to be able to make outfits like that my self. By the way the reason they didn’t have this wasn’t because of engine issues, but was basically they were lazy and the artists thought that they could make outfits look better when not having to worry about how some bits would fit together.

i would like an improvement too the shooting in the game, it isn’t that fun unless using VATS, too people who didn’t play NV they added in “true iron sights” on guns so that was a big improvement in my mind and one of the reasons i don’t return to FO3, the guns should look better and have more mods, and more wasteland looking mods, (say ones you create your self) and the good ones being brought, or depending on your repair skill. maybe being able to make a gun from scratch, making the repair skill a better skill to have, also having more primitive weapons like bows, they had spears in NV so why not, there would be a lot of tribal weaponry so why aren’t they shown much in the games.

Also i’m sure they would make the melee system better, with the new Skyrim showing it a lot nicer (ok now i’m just assuming they will be using it) but working more into it and making that and the unarmed have a better role to play in the games.

Also anything that is an ingredient in consumable and non-consumable items, such as clothing and weaponry, should have what it can be made into stated in the inventory, so many times I’ve just sold what i thought was useless only to find out later that it’s the last thing i needed to make something.

I really like the changes they made to the companions in NV so i would like the too continue and improve on the ideas they already are using, but add in more companions and more non-human types, also any companion they have in a DLC should be integrated into the main game.

That’s all i have for now, sorry for the long comment, but i do love Fallout.
