With the Launch of the PS Vita happening next month in Japan, it seems PlayStation have been working to get the PS3 ready to become a “content management device” for the Vita.
Which brings the announcement of firmware 4.00.
For those of you who will be buying a Vita, this update will enable you to:
- Copy your media (games, music, photos and videos) between both the PS3 and Vita
- Back up your Vita save data to your PS3
- Update your Vita via the network features or your PS3
For those of you with PS+ 4.00 will enable you to enable/disable individual updates. I.e.
- Game Patches
- System Software
- Recommended games and videos
- Trophy Syncing
And finally for those without PS+ or those who won’t be getting a Vita, you’ll be able to enjoy:
- New PSN privacy settings for filtering friend requests and messages.
The update will go live sometime during this week, and as always, we’ll keep you posted if we learn any more.
The update is available now. Users have come across some interesting ‘hidden’ features in addition to the above, the best of which we’ll collate and list below:
- There’s now a health warning screen when the console boots, and per-game warnings under ‘Info’
- There’s a PS Vita System Application Utility menu under the XMB
- You can delete the PS Vita’s System Backup from the XMB
- UK users will rejoice at the British English system language

Seriously it’s 4.00, no big features like a updated XMB which lags on PS3 exclusives except GT5 for some reason.

Also no on the fly trophy sync, really? Make trophy syncing instant, I’m pretty sure it’s easier to sync one trophy as soon as you ge itt instead of 50 having to be synced at once.

Only thing I can think of RAM specs not being good enough. If the PS3 can’t even load up the XMB mid game at a decent speed, would hate to think what it would be like trying to upload that info to a seperate server if you were playing online at the point.

I am amazed at people reactions to this update, sorry its not updated your wish list of improvements for this free service. Just turn on your PS3 5 minutes earlier and wait you ungrateful people.

Agreed. Can understand people hoping for a cool feature with it being number 4. But really, moaning? Just seems a bit silly. And to moan that you don’t get to play the game straight away is verging on pathetic. Like you say, 5 minutes. Go make yourself a coffee. Do the dishes, take a dump. It really is that easy.

It always makes me chuckle how much weight some people put on a firmware update. It’s nice to get them, they are free and historically, they have mainly been used for small bug fixes or capability increases. If anyone got as excitable as they do for PS3 firmware updates for Windows NET Framework updates the world would explode! ;)
