Capcom release a lot of fighting games.
This year’s Street Fighter x Tekken is the latest in a long list of fighting games to have been released since 2008 when Street Fighter IV helped to rejuvenate the genre.
However, according to Capcom, sales of the fighter have “fallen short” of their plans. Since its release in March, the title has shifted 1.4 million copies.
So what does Capcom blame for the game’s poor performance at retail?
“We believe one of causes is cannibalism because of the large number of other games in this genre that were launched within a short time.”
Oh.
For reference, Capcom has released these fighting games on home and portable consoles in the last 4 years:
- Street Fighter IV (2008)
- Super Street Fighter II HD Turbo Remix (2009)
- Marvel vs. Capcom 2 (2009)
- Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars (2010)
- Super Street Fighter IV (2010)
- Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition (2011)
- Super Street Fighter IV 3D (2011)
- Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds (2011)
- Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 (2011)
- Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike Online Edition (2011)
- Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 [Vita] (2012)
- Street Fighter x Tekken (2012)
Let’s not forget about the iOS versions of Street Fighter IV and Marvel vs. Capcom 2 as well!

Came close to buying MvC3 on Vita, but Mortal Kombat won out. Have found I much prefer fighting games on a portable. They are great for short bursts. Maybe I’ll be tempted by SvT on Vita especially if the DLC is included.

Serves them right. I was stung by getting street fighter four, only for the super version to come out. So got that one, then they release the arcade ediotion / dlc. Wanted to get MvC3, but was put off buying any more fighting games when they released the Ultimate version soon after. I may buy SfxTk but only if they release a version with all the dlc unlocked.

Super SFIV was and still is amazing. I’m not sure how Arcade Edition can be look at badly. It was inexpensive DLC that came out a year after its release and it’s something fans specifically requested. Each edition of SFIV came out a year later. MvC3 to UMvC3 is a different story since that was within the same year, which is crazy.
Capcom’s problem definitely wasn’t the SFIV series. It was the way they handled everything else.

I get what you are saying Delriach, but to the standard figher player, the arcade DLC wasn’t inexpensive – If I recall, it was about a tenner & that is pretty expensive for what is no more than an expansion.

I’ve have played, owned and loved ever Street Fighter. Putting hours in, mastering and evolving with each go. SFXT never lived up to the hype. It plays as though all the characters have been on a binge and are all weak and unfit. As a huge fan it pains me to say it but it’s back to SSF4. HOPE TXSF is better as SFXT IS…..SHIT :-(
