Vita Remote Play Starts With God of War and Team Ico

Here it comes, folks. Vita Remote Play – with the ability to play PlayStation 3 games over a WiFi network on your PlayStation Vita – has begun. We first spotted this in a shaky YouTube video which showed off Killzone 3 on the diminutive portable but it’s a few old favourites that are making the first jump, as we revealed on Monday.

God of War Collection, which features HD versions of the first two games in Kratos’ epic adventure is available to play remotely right now. Also available is a couple of games I’ve played but never got around to finishing: ICO and Shadow of the Colossus Collection.

You’ll need to download a patch for the games on your PS3 but that’s free and ready to go now. In addition to the first two pieces of PS3 software available on Remote Play, you can also stream movies and music, check out your photos and use certain XMB apps like Vidzone.

What do you want to get the Remote Play treatment next?

  1. Local version of Vidzone pls.

  2. Remote Play – Uncharted (all three)

  3. Never got round to finishing Ico and SoTC. For shame!
Dead Spaces and Mirrors Edge would be good for remote play I think. Esp Mirror’s Edge as I feel the crisp graphics would translate particularly well to Vita screen.
Also re the patch – is this an auto download or do we have to find it and manually do it (if the latter where / how)? Thanks.

    • I know, I’m perpetually shamed by my lack of completion with the ICO games.
The patch should auto download when you boot the game on PS3.

      • Now that’s what I call service (both from Sony and your prompt reply). Now get Ico and SotC played asap. FYI I think there’s a trophy for completing Ico in something stupid like 3 hours. I’ve played it twice (with a very big gap in between to be fair to me) and second time must have still taken me into double figures! Crazy.

      • One trophy for 4 hours, and another trophy for 2 hours.

  4. Fucking win – I now have time to play Ico from the backlog pile o’shame! (I have more Vita time since I can play whilst the missus watches TV).

    • Dead Space, Might & Magic, Dead Nation and other twin-stick shooters for Remote Play please! Never mind FPS’, why haven’t we got twin-stick shooters on Vita yet!!!

      • thinking the same ere mate. Mrs on the TV means I can sink more time into GOW

  5. I’d love to have Remote Play enabled on Borderlands (2) and FInal Fantasy XIV once that comes out. Yeah, never going to happen but basically I’d like every game to have RP enabled. Why not? :P

  6. As KeRaSh said, every game enabled. Is there anything preventing this? Would Call of Duty (Remote play) still be able to have multiplayer? seeing as it’s just running off the PS3 no?

    • Only thing preventing it is that 3rd party publishers won’t want to unlock the option in case people stop buying their Vita versions of the games. So Acti would rather sell you Black Ops Declassified than let you play Black Ops II via Remote Play for free.

No reason why DLC couldn’t be sold to unlock the option, I suppose.

I’m not sure about multiplayer because the Vita uses the WiFi network to “dial in” to the PS3 for Remote Play so it might not be able to use that same network to get you online? Maybe? I really don’t know, I’m just guessing.

      • if they offered remote play patches for DLC then I’d bite their hands off. £1-2 for older games. £3 for more recent titles would be my ideal pricing!

Perhaps a benefit of PS+ for Vita would be remote play access. Would sure drive sales of the Vita.

      • I personally don’t have an issue with them holding back on games that have a Vita counterpart – I’d rather they developed some decent Vita games to run alongside PS3 franchises (Declassified/Liberation etc) than just enable remote play.

There are plenty of great games that don’t have Vita versions (Borderlands/Dead Space etc as mentioned above).

I just hope a few more companies embrace it, especially as it looks like Wii U will have a similar feature for all their games (to play it on the controller screen – Mass Effect 3 has been shown I believe?).

    • It would be great if some companies enabled their old games for Remote Play, where there was no plan or similar game to be released on the Vita.

  7. You may want to refrain from grunting or yelling whilst playing GOW when on the bog in a the loo either in a public place or work, as you may get get some unwanted attention. ;)

This is an excellent addition as i would love to be able to play ICO and SHOTC on a long journey. I am surprised MGS is not available with remote play but Peacewalker does defeat the purpose of using it via remote play. I can see most exclusives on the PS3 being added over time as Sony would be foolish not to. Although if you are going to play MGS4 on your vita, make sure you are sitting down and the journey is at least 1 hour long. ;)

  8. I’d like to see the PS3 LOVEFiLM app become Remote Play compatible on the Vita.
Or to just be given a Vita-dedicated LOVEFiLM app

  9. I can’t stop playing FFIX on the Vita, so I won’t remote play anything for now :p

  10. This is the news I’ve been waiting for. I’m normally on the ipad whilst the missus is watching TV, now I can get some proper gaming done :)
