Mass Effect 3 Weekend Operation: Vigilance

Every fortnight Bioware run an event for Mass Effect 3’s online multiplayer featuring goals for individuals or squads and an overall goal for the whole ME3 community to aim for. For each of the weekend’s two goals a free pack of in-game goodies is up for grabs and sometimes additional rewards, such as an increase in medi-gel capacity, are also dangled carrot-like in front of us players.

Details of this weekend’s event, Operation Vigilance, have been posted on Bioware’s blog and in their forum where you can ask questions and get feedback and clarification.  The Squad Goal for this weekend is to “complete up to and including wave 10 on any difficulty without using a consumable (medi-gel, ammo, Ops pack or Cobra missile launcher)”.  At least you won’t have to worry about being overrun while waiting for the shuttle home.

[drop2]Though you can tell in-game if a player uses a medi-gel pack or missile launcher it is practically impossible to tell if they use an ammo or ops survival pack.  If you’re playing with randoms who might not know about the operation be very wary of that.

It is a particular problem on PS3 as we do not get an in-game notification of the weekend operations unlike PC and Xbox 360 players.

The Allied Goal or overall community goal for this weekend is to “complete 250,000 escort missions on any difficulty”.  As the three objective rounds (waves 3, 6 and 10) that you get within a mission are random we are all just going to have to play a lot of missions.  Though Bioware may well help by increasing the frequency of escort missions over the weekend.

For successful completion of the individual goal players will be awarded a Commendation Pack and should the allied goal be completed then everyone who played over the weekend, regardless of individual success, will be awarded a Victory Pack.

Even if you have played some ME3 online you may not be aware that the reward packs are the only places that you can get some of the better guns in the multiplayer game, namely the Collector Rifle, N7 Valiant, N7 Crusader, N7 Eagle and N7 Hurricane.

Operation Vigilance starts at 18:00 BST (GMT/UTC+1) on Friday 7th September and runs through until the early hours of Monday 10th for those of us in the UK.  Bioware have not (at the time of writing) posted the end time but it is usually about midnight Sunday as witnessed on the US East Coast if memory serves.

If you want to be sure of the squad goal you could try soloing a mission.  Experience would suggest using a Krogan Vanguard, with the Stronghold gear bonus equipped if you have it at higher levels, against Cerberus on a Bronze mission.

What kit and equipment would you suggest for soloing a mission?

  1. I have a lot of fun with the ME3 multiplayer at the moment, so I’m looking forward to the weekend operation (and maybe get an upgrade for the N7 Hurricane afterwards). Thanks for posting about the operation, many PS3 players are really not aware about these events. I read in a comment from one of the Bioware staff on the ME3 forum, that the lack of the splash screen on PS3 is due to a bug and should be fixed with the next patch. But I guess for this operation, doing a solo bronze game is the safest way to get the commendation pack on PS3 (or playing with friends of course).

Out of curiosity, I tried a solo bronze mission against Cerberus on the London map without using consumables last night. I used my favourite class, the Salarian Infiltrator, equipped with a Hurricane (which can deal with Atlases pretty quick if you equip the high-velocity barrel, especially with the Tactical Cloak damage bonus). Shield Drain is really useful to replenish your shields, stun enemies and remove the barriers of Phantoms. The Proximity Mine can give a 20% damage bonus, take out small groups of Troopers or just be used as a trap to cover your back a bit. Also the London map has a nice vantage point, you can use several routes to run to a safer place if you get swarmed, and there’s lots of debris to protect you from enemy fire from the other side of the map. Luckily I didn’t get the hack objective in the middle of the map, that’s pretty tough (enemies constantly spawning all around you).

Apart from the Infiltrators, I’d also suggest the Human Engineers. A drone with rockets is like an additional player on bronze difficulty :)
