Firmware 4.30 Released, And It’s Not All Good

If it wasn’t bad enough that the latest PlayStation 3 firmware culls Life With PlayStation, it introduces a couple of things that people might not get on with at all, including a fairly major change to the way Trophies are displayed, especially if you don’t have a Vita.

It seems, from the briefest of tests, that Trophies are now kept online, rather than on the hard drive – much like they are on the PS Vita. This means that when you choose to view your silverware be prepared for a fairly substantial wait – and on the first run you can’t back out of it until it’s done.

If you choose to switch to ‘offline’ mode (press Triangle to change) you won’t be able to see your Vita Trophies, which was really the whole point of the update, although it will be a bit quicker.

Naturally, once it’s fully synced it’s a bit quicker and the ability to see your Vita Trophies is clearly a bonus for those of us with both consoles, but it’s also clear that the implementation between the two sets is very different, requiring something of a fudge to get them displaying together.

Remember that Trophies have moved now, they’re under the PSN column.

Secondly, that SingStar icon we mentioned yesterday? It’s baked into the Firmware, meaning it can’t be moved or deleted – it’s always there. I’d have hoped this was a downloadable application and be invisible without the user’s action, but that’s not the case. Sadly, although it’s hardly a massive deal, that XMB is started to feel like there’s a lot of unused chaff in amongst the rows and columns.

Most frustrating, though, is that the issue with Vita-playing friends on your PS3’s XMB hasn’t been addressed. Surely the two systems use the same network – why can’t we see what they’re playing from the Friends list?

  1. I’m actually not sure why people are bothered by the Singstar icon appearing – As far as i am concerned, it’ll just be another thing i never look at.

I only really use three sections of the xmb at any time though – The games (disc & those from the store), the store itself & the friends list. I don’t see that changing from this apart from the fact that trophies are now somewhere different.

  2. To be fair, I play singstar so the icon doesn’t bother me at all but I agree that it should be optional. As for the trophy sync I don’t see what the hoo hah is about. It works fine here and I assume as is intended.

  3. The initial trophy syncing sequence time will be dependant on trophy count, just as is it is now if you upgrade to a new console with the initial trophy sync. Big game hunters like Del, Hunter or Poolie will be in for the long waits. I synced a sub account account earlier with very few trophies and it was done in a few minutes.

    • Just updated and tried a trophy sync expecting it to take a while (7575 trophies), but it took about the same amount of time as it normally takes to do a trophy sync (about 2 minutes).

  4. I don’t understand why people are bothered by singstar being on xmb, it hasn’t made a difference to me so far

  5. I still have Life with PlayStation on mine, Folding and everything. Confusing.

    • That’s all gone from mine, the only differences apart from that is the new Singstar icon and trophies have been moved under the Playstation Network icon section.
Check in your system information if you are running 4.30 ?

      • Yup, 4.30. That’s why I am confused! Restarted again, its still there and working, all the other changes – trophies, singstar are there.

      • Strange indeed, maybe it’s dependant on whether you have used those utilities recently, as in my case not?

      • It is.

      • Last time I used it was last Christmas!
Maybe it will disappear after a while. Or Maybe ‘they’ left it so I can use it to annoy a friend who used to use Life all the time as his music player ;)

      • Got my folding going on too on both PS3’s. Nice!

  6. It could be worse, like we could have loads of Adverts on it like Xbo…i better not say LoL:D

  7. Don’t care for trophies so wont be looking at this anyway, but for those who do, then I feel sorry for you.

    Sony, tut tut.

  8. Bad times. Will not upgrade until folding goes offline :-(

  9. How odd! I’m running 4.30 and although my trophies have moved I still have Life with Playstation and no singstar icon. I did have the viewer previously but I can’t see that SS is ‘baked into the firmware’ as I’ve definitely got 4.30 but it’s not there!

  10. People seem to be having different experiences with this so i’ll check it out for myself this eve. Shame if still they haven’t sorted the part where Vita friends don’t show up properly on the ps3.
