Uncharted Is “Over” As Sony Registers Domains For The Last of Us Sequels

Sony have regisistered domains for The Last Of Us 2 and 3.

It is far to early for Sony to talk about a sequel as the first game is not out but as there are three games in the Uncharted series we may see yet more of Joel and Ellie, probably on PlayStation 4.

Slightly more concerning is this video from Naughty Dog’s Judd Simantov.

His presentation shows the techniques he used in modeling and rigging the game’s primary characters, and he covers special considerations for artists who want to maximize realism and evoke an emotional response from players.

At the 14m 20s mark says “Now that the Uncharted series is over, we had the opportunity to re-evaluate certain things.”

Over? Uncharted? No more Drake? No more Sully? Elena? Chloe? Surely not.

Last week we went hands on with The Last Of Us, check out the preview here.

  1. Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

  2. I absolutely loved the first 80% of all Uncharted games until the endless enemy waves of battling through arena after arena got a bit too much, so I hope Uncharted hasn’t finished, I’d really like there to be more Uncharted, although we do have Uncharted to thank for the new Tomb Raider.

I just can’t get even a tiny bit excited for Last Of Us, it just doesn’t interest me in the slightest.

    • Does anything interest you? I swear every comment I see you write is negative. If I ever make another TSA level, you’re taking the roll Tyrant had in Resident Evil 2 – Following the player constantly throughout the game, moaning, slapping them, and saying everything is shit. ;)

      • Do you mean nemesis in resident evil 3?

      • No. When you finished Resident Evil 2 and played again as the same character but starting from the opposite side of the wreck at the beginning of the game, you see a short cutscene of a T-103 Tyrant being dropped from an Umbrella helicopter. He then follows you throughout the entire game, turning your pants brown.

      • Chris is our resident Grinch! Every comments’ section needs one. :-)

  3. Honestly, this is one of strengths of Naughty Dog as a developer: they know when to let a franchise go. Uncharted’s had a great run, but I hope they give it up- at least for the time being. I’m hoping for a fresh IP for PS4.

    • Couldn’t of put it better myself. Saying that, i was sort of hoping that TLoU would be a one off game so that we could have two new IPs from ND next generation, but, alas, ND never make one off titles.

  4. It’s a good idea to put Uncharted on hold for the time being, like with Jak. Let the hype build up and when the time is right and the teams at Naughty Dog are ready then bring Drake back. :)

Got my copy of The Last Of Us pre-ordered. From what I have seen so far I’m not sure there’s much in the way of sequel potential, I hope they start a new franchise on the PS4, but more Naughty Dog is good.

  5. I think it’s a good idea to put Uncharted to bed, or at least on hold for a while. We’ve had three great games, if not the most visual stunning and most well crafted gaming series to date, and it was tied off nicely. I wouldn’t want to see it become like Assassin’s Creed.

  6. Lovely, mature decision. The developer has possibly the most highly revered name in the industry right now and laying a franchise to rest shows a certain responsibility which can’t help but breed respect. They’re a powerhouse of a studio and The Last of Us is shaping up to be something brilliant too. When it’s time to pop the new franchise on ice they’ll have something else to wow us with, no doubt.

Still… more The Last of Us? Yes, please!

  7. Don’t do this! I was dying for a PS4 Uncharted :'(

I will probably love The Last of Us (although I kind of though this wouldn’t have a sequel), but Drake is Drake. Don’t let it become another Crash Bandicoot.

  8. It was a great ride and I loved every second of it (well almost, that train boss on UC2 on crushing was a tad annoying!).

  9. Isn’t Naughty Dog comprised of two studios. Would have thought one would pump out Uncharted games and the other worked on TLOU.

    • TLOU dev team was Team B, as such, so now we all want to know what Team A is up to! :-)

      • TLOU’s saw a small group split of as a little side team after Uncharted 2, getting the pre-production and early work done whilst Uncharted 3 was in full swing with the rest of the studio.

I’m not entirely sure what happened since then, whether Naughty Dog really bulked up to be able to fully handle two concurrent projects, or if the bulk of the UC3 team then shifted over to TLOU whilst a small core formed the nucleus for ND’s first PS4 project, getting the groundwork done on a new game engine and starting pre-production.

      • From a management perspective, there’s no efficiency in having the rest of the release’s developers then jump on-board with the smaller concept team that started development. It would be … ugh… awful! My time with software developers lets me know that sounds utterly awful and most managers would probably commit suicide trying to handle it all. Especially as it might happen again on the first PS4 project. Wow. No. Just no. My head hurts trying to allow for it all.

I’m hoping for a bulk-up and split (more) evenly. I pray for that! :-)

  10. Its a good time to leave Drake be for a bit. You never know what could happen later… A spin off game featuring Chloe and her cockney mate whatever his name is could be a pretty cool route to go down.
